English School, late 18th / early 19th c - Portrait of John Roysse, bust length, in cap and black coat with fur collar, inscribed AETATIS 63 AN:DNI 1563 and charged with a coat of arms, oil on canvas, 30 x 22cm John Roysse (1500/01-1571) London mercer and benefactor of Abingdon School, Oxfordshire. Another version of this portrait by an unknown artist is at Abingdon School. The arms are those of Roysse impaled on an unknown quartered shield and are a copy of those commissioned by a former headmaster of the school, Henry Bright to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the re-endowment of the School (by Roysse) in 1763. This too remains at the School Lined with small patch lower left, re-varnished, medium thin in places, some overpainting and re-touching (vid coat of arms), but not examined under UV, the stretchers probably 19th c with indistinct scratched number or date ..60, in a birds eye maple frame
