A oval plaster bust of a gentleman with inscription to reverse "Edward Daniel Clarke of Jesus College Cambridge. A brave traveller and author. Beloved by his friends, Blessed be his memory". Clarke (1769-1822) was a student at Jesus College from 1785 and a Fellow from 1795 to 1806. The publication of his travel journals from this latter period, in six vols (1810-23), gained him fame as an explorer. He was ordained in 1805 and appointed vicar of Harlton, Cambs.; from 1809 he was also rector of Yeldham, Essex. He was Professor of Mineralogy at Cambridge from 1808 and University Librarian from 1817 until his death
