Miscellaneous Tokens and Checks, Co DUBLIN, Dublin, [George] Mottley, brass, mottley the hatter 14 redmond’s hill dublin, rev. bust of Victoria left, edge grained, 23mm (W –; Macalister –). About fine, obverse better, very rare £70-£90 --- George Mottley (†1883, hatter, in directories at 14 Redmond’s hill, 1880-2) was a Crown witness in the three trials of Timothy Kelly in 1883, Kelly being one of the assassins of Thomas Burke and Lord Frederick Cavendish in Phoenix Park, Dublin, on 6 May 1882. During the trial, when he had been given police protection, it was stated that Mottley was a twice bankrupt. In early August 1883 the Press Association reported that Mottley had been shot dead in Philadelphia, where he had been living under an assumed name
