A mid 18c thirty hour longcase clock , the 11" square brass dial signed John Lee of Cookham on the silvered chapter ring. The spandrels are of the vase and scroll pattern and the dial centre is matted and engraved with birds. The birdcage movement has rope drive, anchor escapement and countwheel striking on a bell. It is contained in an oak case with broken arch pediment to the case with three finials and rudimentary carving above the dial. The hood door has attached plain columns and the trunk has long rectangular trunk door flanked by quarter columns, the plain base has a tall plain plinth, 84" tall overall.
Jonathan Lowndes, London, a walnut longcase clock:, the month duration movement with five latched pillars striking the hours on a bell, with an outside countwheel, the twelve-inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and five-minute outer markings, with meeting arrow-head half-hour markings, and further half-quarter engraved decoration, signed either side of VI o`clock Jonat. Lowndes, London the matted dial centre with ringed winding holes, a subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture with engraved surround and blued steel hands, the walnut flat-topped case having three-quarter columns to the hood with cast brass capitals, the trunk with cross-banding to the burr-walnut veneered door and a glazed lenticle, with panelled sides, the base with crossbanding to the burr walnut panel, height: 212 cms. * Biography Jonathan Lowndes was a well respected maker working in Pall Mall, London at the turn of the 18th century. He was a member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmaker`s from 1680 and a steward in 1696. A number of his clocks and watches are known in various museums and collections including a number that were in the famous Wetherfidd collection.
Valentine Downs, Louth, an oak longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch brass break-arch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and half-hour fleur-de-lys markings, the matted dial centre with engraved decoration, an inset subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, cast brass c-scroll spandrels to the four corners and blued steel hands, the arch having a boss engraved with the makers name Vale. Downs, Louth and further c-scroll spandrels, the oak flat-topped case having fretwork panels above the dial, applied three-quarter columns to the trunk, a shaped top to the door, shaped plinth to the base, with a shallow caddy to the top of the hood, height: 207cm. * Biography Valentine Downs is recorded as working in Louth, Lincolnshire circa 1791.
Jacob Lovelace, Exon, longcase clock: the thirty-hour duration plated movement with finned and latched pillars, striking the hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the eleven-inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, decorative half-hour markings and signed below Jacob Lovelace, Exon, with a matted centre, wheatear border engraving, crown & cherub spandrels and a single blued steel hand, the later mahogany veneered case with boxwood crossbanding, glass lenticle to the trunk door and barley twist pillars to the flat-top hood, height: 204cm. * Biography Jacob Lovelace is probably Exeter`s most celebrated maker and the maker of the famous Exeter Clock, the remains of which are in Exeter Museum having been bombed during the Liverpool blitz of the Second World War. He worked in St. Stephen`s parish from circa 1712 until 1750 and died on the 30th of November 1755. * Literature, Clive Ponsford ` Time in Exeter ` pages 70-80.
