AN OAK AND MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK by Clark, Cerne Abbas, the crossbanded trunk door surmounted by a hood with swan-neck pediment, the square painted dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture with thirty hour movement, 79" Tribe and Whatmoor record a number of clockmakers by the name of Clark working in Cerne Abbas during the 18th/19th centuries and this clock is probably the work of either Robert Clark, 1791-1861 or William Clark, 1793-1823.

A Thomas Vennall is recorded in Loomes, Brian 'Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Vol 2' as working from Deal 1826-9. This clock may well be an earlier example by this maker or by a relative.

Thomas Wentworth (II) is recorded in Snell, Michael 'Clocks & Clockmakers of Salisbury' as working up to 1740, he was Mayor of Salisbury in 1719. A movement and dial by his father is also included in the sale, Lot 578.

A good Bristol area 30-hour longcase clock movement and dial dated 1759 the four-pillar outside countwheel striking movement with anchor escapement and 11 inch square brass dial with centre engraved 'Jesse & Esther Turner 1759' within leafy scrolls, the applied Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic minutes, fleur de lys half-hour markers and signed 'Samuell Collings, Mangotsfield' along lower edge, with female mask spandrels to angles. Samuel Collings is recorded in Moore A.J. 'The Clockmakers of Bristol 1650-1900' as maintaining Stapleton Church clock in 1789. As this clock pre-dates this by thirty years, it may well have been made by an unrecorded relative.

Thomas Lister is recorded in Loomes, Brian 'Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Vol 2' as working in Luddenden, then Halifax up to 1779 his son, Thomas II was renowned for his world time dials.

The scene to the arch is probably taken from an engraving by Bertolozzi after Thomas Barker of Bath entitled 'The Old Woodman', the model was called George Kelston who was well known in the Bath area in the 1790s. See 'The Barkers of Bath', an exhibition catalogue, Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, 17 May - 28 June 1986 p.27.

Thomas Pace is recorded in Brittens as working 1784-1840. A longcase clock by the same maker was sold in these rooms on 2nd March 2004 Lot 446 for # 3200.

Pear & Son, Stafford' within gilt numeral applied silvered chapter ring and female mask and scroll pattern spandrel applied angles, with moonphase to arch, the swan neck pedimented case with Corinthian pilasters to hood over oval fan cartouche centred trunk door and conforming plinth base with bracket feet, 234cm high. The inside is pasted with a presentation certificate from Tom Pear Senior to his son, Thomas William Pear, on the event of his marriage in 1910, it has remained in the same family since.
