Early 18th century marquetry inlaid 8-day longcase clock, Henry Harper London, the case with moulded overhanging cornice to a pierced gilt brass panel and further overhanging moulding over barley twist columns with further quarter-columns to the back and with brass lined and glazed side panels and dial to an ogee moulded throat and long trunk door with D moulded border and enclosing marquetry detail of a floral urn with birds over a further brass lined and glazed lenticle with further floral and bird detail beneath, all within marquetry borders to a similarly decorated plinth base with further moulding and with plain side panels to a 10 1/2 ins square brass dial with wheatear border to cast and applied cherub and crown spandrels, to a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with outside minute track and inside quarters, with further half hour markers to a matted centre with silvered subsidiary seconds and date sector with ringed winding squares and fitted pierced and carved blued steel hands to a movement with plates united by 5 knopped and finned pillars with anchor escapement and strike on a bell and fitted with a steel rod pendulum and pair of flat topped brass cased weights, height 80ins Condition: Case: extensive repair and restoration throughout – see photos. He was one of the finest clockmakers in the North West, his work being of a very high standard, even in his thirty hour clocks. This example, number 561, is recorded and listed in Cave-Brown-Cave (BW) Jonas Barber Clockmaker of Winster , pg.230, where he lists the lives and work of the Barber family.
