Lot 1113

William Bell Lancaster, Oak Cased Longcase Clock, Painted Dial

Lot 1067

A mahogany cased wall clock, circa 1900, with longcase clock dial and Victorian two-train striking movement. Case 32 cm x 43 cm x 9 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This clock does not require weights. It is a spring driven movement. We have the key and pendulum. The movement is fully wound on both trains. It does however strike when the brake lifted from the count wheel. We cannot ascertain whether the movement is ticking or not as the suspension feather to the top of the pendulum is snapped. When the escapement is flicked without the pendulum in position the clock mechanism does appear to tick. The brass dial is in generally good order. The silvering is partially rubbed. Some of the blacking to the numerals is missing also. The mahogany case is in generally good order. There is one small loss to the top rear of the top section of the arch. Both side doors operate and hinge as they should.

Lot 1079

An Edwardian mantle clock, in the form of a miniature longcase clock, with single-train movement with Arabic numerals and inlaid to the case with a Dutchman. Height 32.5 cm, width 13 cm.

Lot 1160

An early 19th century mahogany longcase clock, by Sagar, Blackburn, with two-train striking movement. Height 243 cm including brass finial.

Lot 1170

A George III mahogany and walnut longcase clock, probably Whitehaven, bearing old label for Michael King Looking Glass Maker, Carver & Gilder to The Door, with swans neck pediment and Verre Eglomise panels above the arched door enclosing the enamelled dial with moon phase and eight day striking movement, with long trunk door and all raised on bracket feet. Height including finial 229 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Whilst the clock is ticking away and striking as it should neither the moon face or the date hand are currently connected and there are pieces missing here. The dial is badly rubbed and much of the gilding not present. The Arabic numerals around the Roman numerals are not visible neither are the date markers. The case itself is in generally good structural condition. There is considerable wear to the verre eglomise. The hood should have rear flat uprights at the rear of the sides of the case, these are missing. The trunk door is not warped. The sides of the case are in generally good order as is the blind fretwork and the base. There are no significant issues with the case other than the missing sections at the rear of the hood and very minor losses of the edge cornice.

Lot 1306

A 19th century oak and walnut longcase clock, with square brass dial and two-train striking movement by John Clark. Height 217 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The clock hood is missing its top panel. There is no glass to the door. The hood is structurally otherwise sound. The trunk door is not warped and closes as it should. The sides of the trunk are in good condition. The base has a timber loss to the left hand side which should be evident from our image. The sides of the base are in good order. The base will probably have had a plinth at some point and now looks rather low. The dial is extremely dirty as is the movement. It appears complete. We have the pendulum but the metal suspension is missing. We have two weights. The movement and case are clearly a marriage. It is also a little odd to have a walnut veneered door on an oak case.

Sliman, Cumnock". Height 221 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is in generally very good order. The hood is in good condition with no issues. The moulding above the long trunk door is missing at the front and both sides. Other than this the case is really in extremely good condition. We have the pendulum and both weights. The catgut is however perished and we have not had the movement running. One of the cheek blocks is missing and the movement does not sit straight in the case, the movement appears to be complete and is simply a little dirty. The clock is not a marriage.

Lot 1499

A Victorian mahogany Scottish drumhead longcase clock, with circular painted dial by W. Davie, Falkirk, and two-train striking movement, with bowed trunk door flanked by half round columns and with panelled base. Height 213 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is in generally good condition with only very minor issues. The colour is uniformly good. The pediment has a small loss to the bottom left hand corner. The door closes as it should. The hinge is a little loose. The front of the case is in very good condition as are the sides of the trunk. There is a stress fracture to the rear right hand side of the base at the back. All feet are original and in generally good order. We have a pendulum and two weights. The movement is a little dirty but appears to be all present. The date wheel is in place. We have not had the clock running, however when weight is applied to the going train the seconds hand operates. The same comment applies to the strike train.

A Regency mahogany Scottish drumhead longcase clock, with gilt painted dial with Roman numerals and with two-train striking movement, the trunk door flanked by quarter column corners and with panelled base raised on bracket feet. We have both weights and pendulum but no winding key. The face is in generally good condition with only minor rubs and surface marks. The hood is in good condition with no issues. The trunk door has had a small break to the top left hand corner. The piece has been glued and there are no losses. We have the key and the door locks. The door is not warped. The sides of the case are in good condition. The base of the case is also in good order with only minor marks and small scratches. The backboards are original.

Lot 1587

An oak and mahogany cased longcase clock, with single pointer, thirty hour movement, brass dial and crossbanded trunk door. Height 195 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This clock and case are clearly a marriage hence the estimate. The case itself has a rather strange pediment which may not be original. The cornice is mahogany and the door surround, pillars and sides oak. The hood is in reasonable order. The trunk door is not warped it is however locked and we do not have a key. The trunk and base are also a marriage. The movement is of interest being a bird cage type. We have a weight but no pendulum. The movement does operate when weight is applied to the mechanism. We have however not had the clock running. We have a weight but no pendulum. The dial dimensions are 29.7 cm square. Please note the height of the clock is 195 cm not 95 cm.

Lot 1630

A 19th century walnut regulator longcase clock, with four pillar movement, shaped plates and centre seconds, diameter 31 cm, case with glazed door and bombe base, height 216 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is in generally extremely good condition and a good colour. The hood has no issues. The trunk door is in good order and not warped. The glass is original. All mouldings are in good condition. The sides of the trunk are original and in good order also. The only minor issue to the base is a veneer loss on the top left hand corner which should be visible in our images. There are minor scuffs around the bombe base and what looks like an old veneer repair to the right hand side. The movement winds as it should. It is currently ticking away and appears to be in good order. We think that this is an 8 day clock. The pendulum has been broken just above the brass fitment above the bob. This has been drilled and pegged and whilst slightly loose the repair is effective. We do not have a key for either the mechanism or the door.

Lot 1638

A George III mahogany longcase clock, with triangular pediment and silvered circular dial, with two-train movement striking on a gong by James Bell, Edinburgh, and with deadbeat escapement. Height 195 cm (see illustration).

There is small timber loss to the edge moulding above the lock escutcheon. To the left of the top of the door there is a bruise to the timber. The sides of the clock are in generally good order with only minor surface scratches and marks. The base panel has edge moulding missing to the top left and right and bottom left. There are minor stress fractures to the veneers and other small marks. The sides of the base are in similar condition. The left hand return moulding has a small section missing. All feet are present and original. The dial is as you can see from our image in reasonable condition but does have some paint loss particularly around the winding apertures and numerals 4 and 5. We have two weights. When weight is applied to the movement the seconds hand does operate. The same applies to the strike train. When weight is applied the clock strikes. Unfortunately we have no pendulum. The minute hand is missing its end pointer. The movement appears to be complete but is a little dirty.

All of the scrolling mouldings are in good condition. The trunk door is not significantly warped and closes as it should. We have the key. The plinth which as stated appears to be from a different case is also in good order with no condition issues. The dial looks to have been fairly recently re-finished and is in generally very good order with only minor blemishes. The clock is currently ticking away. There is however no catgut to the strike train. We have only one weight. The striking mechanism namely the bell, rack and hammer are missing as is the date wheel mechanism.

His work and output increased after the death of his only serious local competitor, Thomas Ogden, in 1769. He made a number of very complicated clocks including world-time and musical clocks. Thomas Lister senior, of the well known family of Halifax clockmakers, started out producing 30hour cottage type longcase clocks, his son Thomas junior then began making more complicated clocks, this surely being one of those examples....
