An early Georgian Oak country Longcase Clock, the fret cut top over applied moulding frieze to the head with single pane glazed door flanked by turned pillar supports, ormolu mounted face having second hand and date roller. Engraved ''Phillips Bromyard'' with ornate brass escutcheons, and having lower moulding over box base. 19 5/8'' wide x 76'' high x 11 1/8'' deep
A mid 18c thirty hour longcase clock, the 12" square brass dial signed Richard Midgeley (probably Halifax). The dial has floral spandrels to the corners, a date ring, dummy winding holes and a Halifax penny moon above the centre with a separate aperture indicating the day of the moon. The chapter ring has Roman numerals and outer Arabic five minute numbers. The hands are unmatched steel, the movement is chain driven with countwheel striking on a bell. It is contained in a tall oak case which has been heavily re-carved at a later date. The hood has a flat top with broad outstanding top moulding and turned columns flanking the dial, the trunk has a long rectangular trunk door. The base has an inset rectangular panel and a wavy plinth, from the top moulding to plinth the whole is profusely covered in Victorian carving, 87" tall overall.
A late 18c eight day longcase clock, the 12" arched silvered dial signed William Marsh, London and having strike/silent (mechanism removed) and seconds dials (the date aperture has been filled). The five pillar movement has rack strike and anchor escapement and brass bound weights and brass pendulum rod. It is contained in a black lacquered case with full arched hood and plain columns flanking the dial. The trunk door is divided into two transfer printed scenes, the top one of a shepherdess and her flock and the lower showing a domestic scene of a couple, these are divided by gold lacquered floral and geometric panels. The door has a raised edge London type moulding and the base has another transfer panel showing a bird and floral display, the clock has a plain plinth and stands 85.5" tall.
A George III mahogany longcase clock, the arched and silvered dial signed Panchaud, Oxford Street, London, with strike/silent and second dials and date aperture with Roman and Arabic numerals in a dome topped case, 222cm high/see illustration Condition Report: This clock is from the W H Smith archive. There are a few minor scratches to the dial and the hands are on the stiff side, clock at present working. The hood door showing signs of re-gluing to the side pillars together with some staining, case sides good but some veneer splitting to door frame at arch, veneer splitting at base.
A Longcase Clock, the brass arched dial inscribed 'Jos Jackeman on London Bridge' the arch with a see-saw automaton, seconds ring and date aperture, the three train movement striking on a rack of eight bells with a further large bell, in an oak case with carved decoration, swans neck pediment and bracket feet. 7' 4" (224cms) high, diameter of dial 12" (31cms), lacks pendulum, only one weight present.
William Avenell, Alresford, an oak moonphase longcase clock: the eight-day duration five-pillar movement striking the hours on a bell, the eleven and a half inch brass break-arch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and outer five-minute numerals, with unusually the subsidiary strike/silent dial to the dial centre below XII o'clock with a date aperture above VI o'clock and shaped cartouche engraved with the maker's name Will. Avenall, Alresford, with a moonphase aperture to the arch and sweep seconds hand, the oak flat-topped case with fretwork to the hood and three-quarter columns with brass capitals, with a break-arch trunk door and plain base, height 202cm. * Biography William Avenall was a well-known maker recorded working in Old Alresford in circa 1760 with another of the same name known to be in Portsmouth in the early part of the 19th century.
Jno. Scobell, Colyton, an oak and mahogany longcase clock:, the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch square painted dial having black Roman numerals, floral decoration to the corners, subsidiary seconds dial and blued steel hands, signed to the centre with the maker's name Jno. Scobell, Colyton, the falseplate to the dial embossed with the dial maker's name Walker & Hughes, B/Ham, the oak case with mahogany crossbanding, mahogany canted corners and diamond panels above and below the trunk door, all inlaid with decorative stringing, the flat-topped hood with tapered pillars having brass capitals, height 194cm. * Biography John Spurway Scobell was born in July 1799, the son of Joseph & Mary, and first listed as a clockmaker in Ottery St. Mary in 1830 before moving to Colyton a few years later, a clock signed by him at the latter town is dated for 1837.
Ralph Banks, Devonport, a mahogany longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the brass break-arch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, the centre with a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture and engraved Ralph Banks, Devonport, with an engraved boss to the arch, the mahogany case with wavy edge moulding to the hood door, fluted pillars and standing on bracket feet, 213cm. high. * Biography Ralph Banks is recorded working at Plymouth Dock (Devonport) often using clocks 'bought-in' from top London suppliers including John Thwaites. It is known that he married Rebecca Palmer Collings at Stoke Damerel parish church in December 1782 under whose name the business was listed in 1812.
