A George III mahogany crossbanded oak longcase clock, 33cm arched painted dial. convex Arabic chapter, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, floral spandrels, Adam and Eve automaton to arch, twin winding holes, signed Mawkes/Derby, the eight day movement striking on a bell, hood with swan neck cornice terminating in brass stamped roundels, centred with a ball and spire finial, turned columns, shaped door to waist flanked by canted angles, outswept base, bracket feet, 218cm high, c.1830 ***William Mawkes was the fourth son of Thomas Mawkes (1740-1821) a former apprentice and employee of the celebrated John Whitehurst, FRS. William, who was born in 1782, worked with his father until his death and then on his own account until c. 1830. This is the first recorded example of an automaton clock by this maker.
