A rare William III walnut and Arabesque marquetry eight-day longcase clock William Bilsbrough, Gargrave, circa 1695-1700 The four thick finned pillar inside countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum and tall plates, the 11.25 inch square brass dial with subsidiary seconds dial, ringed winding holes and calendar aperture to the fine foliate scroll engraved centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with stylised sword hilt half hour markers, Arabic five minutes to narrow outer track and signed William Bilsborrow, Fecit to lower edge, with pierced blued steel hands and angles applied with winged cherub mask and foliate scroll cast spandrels, in a case with ogee moulded cornice and floral trail pierced fret to frieze above conforming foliate strapwork scroll inlaid glazed hinged dial surround applied with Solomonic three-quarter columns to front angles, the sides with rectangular windows and later baluster turned half columns applied next to bargeboards at the rear, the trunk with convex marquetry veneered throat moulding centred with a grotesque mask over 41.5 inch rectangular door centred with a circular lenticle and with three shaped marquetry panels decorated with bird inhabited strapwork scrolling foliage enveloping grotesque masks incorporating pewter inlaid eyes on a fruitwood ground within a walnut field, the sides veneered in walnut, the base with stepped ogee top moulding and conforming rectangular marquetry panel within further crossbanded surround over shallow mounded skirt, 202cm (79.5ins) high. William Bilsbrough is recorded in Loomes, Brian Clockmakers of Britain 1286-1700 as born in 1669 the son of Richard Bilsbrough of Moorber, Yorkshire. His children were baptised between 1695 and 1709 with two of his sons (one also named William) also becoming clockmakers. William Bilsbrough senior is recorded as repairing long Preston church clock in 1707-09, in 1737 he made a new clock for Gisburn Park and died in 1750. Loomes also refers to a marquetry longcase clock by Bilsbrough which could well be the current lot.
A George III oak and mahogany longcase clock, the 28cm brass dial with silvered chapter ring inscribed Ashton, Ashburn (sic) Roman numerals, date aperture, 30-hour movement striking on a bell, the case with swan neck pediment, shaped rectangular door to waist centred by an oval shell patera, bracket feet, 207cm high, c.1800The signature is that of Samuel Ashton the younger born at Macclesfield 1828, apprenticed to father at Tideswell 1742-49, and moved to Ashbourne c. 1750, leaving his brother Aaron to succeed to their father's business at Tideswell. The two son,s Thomas and Martin, the former working from Tideswell and the latter in partnership with his father from 1791 and his successor until his own death in 1829 [Craven, M & Hughes, R G 'Clockmakers & Watchmakers of Derbyshire' (Mayfield 1998) 57-58.] Condition Report: Generally good. Dial and movement associated with case.

Holmes, Cheadle", the eight day movement striking on a bell, keeping surprisingly good time, 87 3/8" tall.

A Good Oak Eight Day Longcase Clock, signed William Barnard, Newark, circa 1735, flat top pediment, arched trunk door with moulded borders, glass lenticle, 12-1/4-inch square brass dial with a silvered chapter ring signed, date aperture and seconds dial, four pillar movement with an anchor escapement, rack striking on a bell, 208cm high, This clock was purchased from Brian Loomes in 2008 and is sold with the invoice see illustration William Barnard (1707-1784) was one of the best-known Newark clockmakers. He was apprenticed to Nottingham clockmaker Daniel Tantum in 1724. This example is a pre-numbered clockwhich dates it to circa 1735. 18.10.18, Case is clean, hood with slight repairs to the column capitals, plinth skirting is later, silvered chapter ring with minor discolouring, movement is clean, movement in going order, with pendulum and two weights.
