CONDITION REPORT: The case, minor damage beneath the cavetto cornice approx. 4cmsx0.25cms, glass door original, original putty border good colour to hood, the long door some movement in the drop hinge, door not fitting flush particularly at the bottom gap of 1.5cms, old repair to edge of the top of the door and a small piece of moulding missing, some surface scratching, good colour, minor surface scratching, old split to plinth base and a minor division between the left and right hand boards to the face of the plinth showing daylight, original long back board, bracket feet old, traces of lacquering to the brass chaptering, original hands, the movement would appear to be in good condition with pendulum, one weight, two extra lead wheels.

A George III inlaid mahogany longcase clock With a 31cm arched brass dial with a silver chapter ring signed Helm , Ormskirk with subsidiary seconds, the centre engraved with mask and scrolling leaves, leafy mask spandrels, the two train eight day movement with anchor escapement, rack striking on a saucer bell, the case with a swan neck cresting with flower terminals and urn finials above a glazed panel painted with leaves above turned wood columns, the trunk with a long door, well figured wood flanked by quarter columns raised upon a panelled plinth base with two weights, pendulum and movement winding key, glazed door cracked. approximately 231cms x width of plinth 50x25cms. CONDITION REPORT: Condition Report Lot 2115 - not in working order. date approx 1780-1800 The case, turned finials on left and right hand side possibly replaced, central finial possibly replaced traces of glue beneath the plinth on which it sits, old polish within the flowers, some rubbing to the glazed panels to the gilt the arched glass with an extended crack from left to right, the hinges are loose particularly the top hinge requires strengthening, some movement to the lower hinge, piece of veneer missing to the corner of the top of the upright column on the left hand side, lower plinth to the upright column piece of plinth missing at the back, return moulding right hand side beneath the right hand column piece of moulding missing at the back measures approx. 10cmsx0.25cms long door, some movement to the top hinge requires tightening, slight drop to the right hand side minor, the case possibly polished, some scratching to the plinth, some scratching to the bracket feet particularly the right hand side, original back board with old tape running the full length upto plinth, inside of the hood an old canvas applied on the left hand side and two strips of the right hand side where old splits have been brought together, the arched dial the seconds hand bent, scratching to the silver chaptering and scratches to the metal below, some scratching to the outer gilt brass ground, original foot board, repair to the wire upright which guides the pendulum, movement dusty not running, one winding wheel attached to cat gut one winding wheel separated, repair to the pendulum, the bob scratched. IN MY OPINION THE DIAL, MOVEMENT AND CASE BELONG TOGETHER.

(illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: Pagoda shape top to the hood lacking a finial, carved flowers part of the scrolling leaf damaged approximately 2.5cms, the glass frieze possible crack or division in the centre and a crack on the right hand side, gilt decoration dull, glass to door original, holder original putty in place, crossbanding and line inlays to door good some tarnishing to the gilded tops and plinth of fluted columns, left hand back column lacking, the right hand back column sits overtly proud, trunk, pine back natural shrinkage crack, old wall fixing screw apertures, long door warped at the top and dose not close tight, good colour, discolouration to the capitals and bases of the fluted side columns, original pine horizontal board to bottom plinth, side moulding right hand side missing, stress crack running horizontally on the bottom of the raised panel plinth good colour, the panel is sitting proud on the right hand side and requires tightening, lacking feet, the arched dial some discolouration to gilding the arch, lunar calendar some scratching to the paintwork of the castle, moon face and bridge rubbing to the silvered chapter ring, some dirt discolouration to the central matted ground, scratching and rubbing to the seconds ring and date aperture, fingers appear original. movement not running (the side. moulding off the plinth is in the box with the clock requires re-fixing, but slightly chipped on the outer edge), foot board part replaced.

A George III oak longcase clock, 33cm white dial, dummy winding holes, Roman chapter, signed Jas Ashton/Tideswell, subsidiary seconds dial, 30 hour movement striking on a bell, the hood with curly pediment, fluted brass capped columns, shaped door with Baroque brass escutcheon, flanked by fluted quarter columns, plinth base, 207cm high James Ashton was a third generation member of the extensive clockmaking dynasty which flourished on both sides of the Derbyshire/Cheshire border, being grandson of Samuel Ashton of Tideswell and son of Samuel's younger son, Aaron, also of Tideswell. The elder branch of the family flourished at Ashbourne and Macclesfield, James himself was born c. 1769, was apprenticed to his father 1783-1790 and married Sarah Shepley (a relative of John Shepley of Derby, clock maker) at Glossop in September 1791, working into the second decade of the 19th century.

Stripling/Lichfield, eight-day movement striking on a bell, shaped rectangular door to trunk flanked by attached quarter columns, turned feet 91in (230cm) high, c. 1810 Thomas Stripling came to Luichfield from Coventry in 1761 to take over the business of James Hunt who had died that year. From 1775 he was in partnership with his nephew Thomas Gilbert and from that time some of the clocks are signed Stripling & Gilbert.to 1817, when it became T Stripling again, although the original Thomas was by then dead..
