AN ENGLISH OAK THIRTY HOUR LONGCASE CLOCK, JOHN WYLD, NOTTINGHAM, MID 18TH C with typical chain driven movement and signed brass dial, the oak case with flat topped hood, 193cm h John Wyld was born in 1709 and worked first for his uncle the locally renowned clockmaker James Woolley of Codnor, Derbyshire (c1700-c1780). Wyld worked independently from 1732, first at Codnor before moving to Chapel Bar, Nottingham in 1745. The case of the present clock is similar to a number of other known examples and it would appear that both Wyld and Woolley obtained their cases from the same maker. Wyld's son, John Wyld II, continued the business until c1770. The present clock is characteristic of a number of other locally made longcase movements of the period with features such as the arch cut-out backplate.++In good fully restored condition and has been working for a full thirty hour duration in the saleroom. An attractive example

When weight is applied to the going train the clock movement does tick. We cannot ascertain whether the clock is currently striking or not. We have the clock key and weights. The face is in good order with only minor surface scratches and a loss to the paint just below the numeral 1 which corresponds with a pillar fixing. The subsidiary seconds hand is missing. The pretty case is in generally good order. Neither door is warped. The only minor issue is that the bottom left hand return base moulding is missing.

CONDITION REPORT: This item is from a private seller. The clock is in good working order and has been working up until its removal to the saleroom. The date dial and seconds dial both work. There are what look to be tarnishing marks on the dial and for aesthetics you may like these to be cleaned up. The dial that is not tarnished has a nice toned appearance. The case is in good clean order throughout. The date mechanism operates as it should.

The trunk door is not warped. The base has some veneer loss to the bottom left hand corner. All feet and backboards are original. We have both weights, pendulum and key. The movement is extremely dirty and we have not had the clock running. There is no cat gut. The movement appears to be complete but as stated is extremely dirty. We do not have the seconds or date hand both barrels do wind.
A George III mahogany longcase clock, by Liam Burton, Kendal, with eight day striking movement, penny moon and date aperture, with long trunk door and raised on bracket feet 211 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock movement is original to the dial. The clock has come to us from a local property and is currently ticking away and striking as it should. In our opinion the case and movement are not original to each other. The seatboard is a replacement and the cheeks of the clock have had some alteration. The mask around the face is also later. The dentil moulding to the cornice has losses. The trunk door and glazed door are not warped and close as they should. The case is in generally good condition. It is likely that the plinth at the bottom of the case is a later replacement. The clock case is certainly a local case but as stated we believe the two to be a marriage. Dial 12" square.
A George III longcase clock, mahogany, with eight day striking movement by Lott Barwise, Cockermouth, with swans neck pediment, arched glazed door, 13 inch dial, long trunk door, quarter column corners and raised on bracket feet. Height 90 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The hood is in extremely good overall condition. There are some minor stress fractures to the veneers between the swans necks pediments but these are minimal and not problematic. There is likely to have been a gilt wheatsheaf or something of that nature between the pediments. This is missing. The hood door is not warped and the glass is original. The trunk door has a very slight warp which is not visible when viewed from the front only from a side angle. The top of the door is proud of the case when closed by approximately 1/2 cm. This tapers to nothing by the time it is parallel with the lock. The lock operates, we have the key. There are minor stress fractures again to the door veneers and base panel veneers. The sides of the case are in good condition all around. The bracket feet which are original are also in good order. The mask around the dial fits very well. The dial itself is as you see in our image. There is some minor overpainting to the small Arabic numerals on the date ring and also to the lettering. The seatboard is clearly original. Whilst the clock cheeks are not of traditional construction it may still be that the case and movement are original to each other. The clock case is clearly of local manufacture (probably Whitehaven). It is contemporary with the dial and movement and has come in from a local private source. We have two weights and the pendulum. The cat gut to the strike train is broken. The clock does however tick. The movement is very dirty but appears to be all present.
