A George III oak longcase clock by Thompson of Wigton, with arched brass dial with moon phase to the arch, with centre seconds movement, the case with long trunk door flanked by fluted quarter column corners. Height 216 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock hood is in good order with no issues. The trunk door is not warped and the sides of the case are in good condition. The base is in generally good structural order although a little scuffed and dirty particularly around the plinth. We have both weights and pendulum but no key. The clock is currently ticking away and striking but the movement is dirty as is the dial. The clock is not in our opinion a marriage, the cheeks have not been altered and the mask fits well around the dial.
A George III mahogany longcase clock, with eagle and ball finial above the swans neck pediment in turn above the glazed door enclosing the 30 cm arched painted dial and two-train striking movement, flanked by fluted columns with brass capitals, with rectangular trunk door flanked by canted angles and the whole raised on bracket feet. Height including finial 223 cm (see illustration).
An 18th century Dutch marquetry longcase clock, with bronze figure of Atlas above the caddy top in turn above the arched glazed door enclosing a brass dial and two-train movement by Archibald Lawrie, Carlisle, width 31.5 cm, and with long arched trunk door with lenticle and canted angles and raised on a bombe base. Height 285 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: As the case is Dutch and the dial and movement English it is unlikely that the case and movement have always been together. The mask around the dial does fit extremely well and the clock does not look like a marriage. The movement appears complete but it is dirty. We have not had the clock running. The case is in generally good unestored condition but would benefit from some cabinetwork. There are small areas of veneer and marquetry missing but no significant amounts. There are various cracks to the veneers and mouldings but again none of these are particularly problematic. The trunk door is not warped. The side panels are in good order. The canted angels are in good condition. The base is generally in good order although there is a crack from left to right through the top half of the vase and further stress cracks to the veneers above this. The base moulding is generally in good order and the feet are original. The backboards are original. There is very little trace of any woodworm and certainly none that is currently live. We have no specific or interesting information re provenance unfortunately.
A William Porthouse of Penrith 30 hour longcase clock movement, with date aperture and inscribed "Jane Williamson 1772", in later carved oak case. CONDITION REPORT: The cheeks have not been built up. The seatboard is old. If the case is original then the mask around the dial fits well. If the case is original then perhaps it is later carved.
A George III oak and walnut banded longcase clock, with eight day striking movement by R. Deaves, Whitchurch, the arched brass dial with moon phase, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, the long trunk door flanked by quarter column corners and raised on a conforming base. Height 207 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is generally in very good order. The hood has no issues and is of good colour. The crossbanded frieze beneath the bottom edge of the hood has minor veneer losses at the corners. The trunk door is not warped. The sides of the case and base are all in good condition and the bracket feet are original. The case is of good colour and requires very little work if any. The clock winds on both trains and appears to be ticking and striking however it is a little dirty. There do not appear to be any pieces missing and the moon phase mechanism is present. We do not think that the clock is a marriage as the fit around the dial is good, the seatboard original and the cheeks not built up.
A George III oak and mahogany crossbanded longcase clock, by Timothy Graham of Workington, with two-train striking movement and moon phase to the arch. Height 223 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The left hand swans neck has been broken and re-attached. Other than this the hood is in very good order. The trunk door is not warped and shuts as it should. The sides of the case are in good condition as is the base. The bottom board is clearly later and the clock may well have had a deeper plinth and/or bracket feet. We have a pendulum but it does not appear to be the correct one for the clock, we have the weight. The movement is ticking away without the pendulum and also striking. The movement is however very dirty and requires an overhaul in our opinion. The case movement and dial are in our opinion not a marriage. Please note this a 30 hour clock not eight day.
A Regency mahogany longcase clock by Muirhead of Glasgow, with carved pediment, circular dial, two-train movement, subsidiary seconds and date dial, with rectangular trunk door flanked by fluted column corners. Width 198 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The hood is in very good condition. The door is not warped. The seat board is clearly original and the clock is not a marriage. The silvered brass dial is a little dirty as is the silvering in places. The movement is all present and correct and appears to operate when weight is applied to the going train. We have the weights and pendulum and there is a winding key. The trunk door is flat and not warped. The trunk itself is in extremely good condition as is the base and feet which are original.
A George III longcase clock by Bancroft of Scarbro, with fretwork pediment, arched painted dial, two-train striking movement, subsidiary date and seconds dials, flanked by fluted columns, with long trunk door, crossbanded base and raised on bracket feet. Height including brass finial 231 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The hood is in generally very good order. There is no significant damage, no losses and the door is not warped and operates as it should. The colour is good, the trunk and base are also in very good order and no cabinetwork is required. The door is not warped and locks and we have the key. The bracket feet are all present and appear to be original. The rear of the case is original. The dial is a little tired. The numerals are rubbed and worn and some have been badly overpainted. The clock is currently not operating. The movement is very dirty but appears to be all present. The pendulum is damaged although we have all of the pieces. We have a winding key. The seatboard is clearly original however it does not sit directly on top of the cheeks which appear to have been first reduced in height and then packed out back to the original height which is a little odd. The mask around the dial fits extremely well. In our opinion the clock is not a marriage however we cannot be certain. We have only one pulley and no weights.
An early 19th century mahogany cased longcase clock, by L.W. Banks of Leicester, dial width 38.5 cm, with moon phase and with three-train movement striking on a gong and with four further musical gongs, with moon phase to the arch and spandrels emblematic of the Continents, the case being ebony strung and raised on bracket feet. Height 243 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is in extremely good order and does not require any repairs or restoration. There have been minor veneer repairs to some of the crossbanding but none of these are significant. The only minor issue is some vertical stress fractures to the base which should be visible from our images. The dial looks to have been fairly recently cleaned and is in very good order as is the movement which is currently ticking away and seems to be operating as it should. We have all keys, weights and pendulum.
A Regency mahogany longcase clock by Tinkler of Newcastle, with arched hood and glazed door enclosing the painted arched dial and eight day striking movement, with subsidiary date and seconds dials, flanked by turned columns, with arched trunk door and conforming base. Height 232 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The hood is in generally good condition with no significant damage, no losses and no visible restoration. There is some slight lifting to the veneers around the door and on the left and right hand return mouldings. The case itself is in generally very good condition. The door is very slightly warped and there is a gap at the top left hand side which is visible when the clock is viewed from the side. This is not a particularly significant warp but it is visible. There is a small veneer loss to the case to the left of the lock plate. The dial is in generally good condition. The movement winds and is currently ticking away. We have both weights, pendulum and keys. The clock cheeks are of odd construction however the face fits well around the mask and it is unlikely that the clock is a marriage however we cannot be certain of this.
A George III oak longcase clock, Henry Foster, Brampton, with silvered brass dial with date aperture and thirty hour movement, the case with rounded quarter column corners and canted angles to the base. Height 215 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The seat board is original and the cheeks have not been built up. The mask around the dial fits. We therefore do not think that this clock is a marriage. The movement is currently ticking away and appears to be striking correctly. The date dial appears to be connected. The dial is in very good order and looks to have been re-silvered at some time within the last 10 years. The trunk door is not warped and the case is in generally very good condition. The clock could be used in its current condition without the need for any repair or restoration.
A George III oak, eight day longcase clock, the arched dial painted with a girl in a landscape , by Robert Fletcher, Chester, 215 x 49cm. Condition Report: The dial looks too low in the hood suggesting they didn't start life together. Damage to painted dial - otherwise well presented, with key weights and pendulum.
