A fine quality late Georgian marquetry inlaid mahogany cased striking eight day longcase clock by Thomas Moss of Frodsham, Having a moon phase arched brass dial decorated with engraved verse, days of the month and foliated urns to the arch, above the foliate engraved silvered center section featuring three winding holes, makers name, scrolling pierced hands, seconds hand, and date hand, between the silvered chapter ring featuring hours, seconds and days of the month between relief cast scrolling foliate spandrels, the eight day movement striking on seven bells, the highly decorative case featuring brass finials to the swan neck pediment above parquetry inlaid columns with gilt metal caps to the hood, the trunk featuring marquetry, parquetry and stringing inlay, a feathered veneered triple Gothic arch door above an inlaid, cross banded and feathered panelled base flanked by canted corners, the whole raised on bracket feet, complete with three weights, pendulum and winding key, total height approx. 244cm (8 ft).NB: Thomas Moss of Frodsham, Cheshire, is recorded as being born in 1733, first married in 1757, married again in 1773, and died in 1785. Following his death his widow Mary placed an announcement in the Chester Courant, dated 22nd February 1785 that she would be continuing his business. CONDITION REPORT: Pendulum and weights as listed in catalogue description. Weights not got brass sleeves, pendulum has brass covered bob.
