A mid-19th century Irish mahogany cased longcase clock by William Sprat, Saintfield, Ireland, with a swans neck pediment with wooden patera and finial, with a recessed break arch hood door flanked by two turned and ringed columns, trunk with canted corners and raised panels with a matching rectangular flat topped door, on a rectangular plinth with conforming canted corners and a flat base (feet missing) , a fully painted break arch dial with matching spandrels and a depiction of a country house and lake to the arch, with Roman numerals and minute track, subsidiary seconds dial and date disc behind an arched aperture, with matching unstamped brass hands and painted depiction of birds of paradise to the dial centre, dial pinned via a steel false plate to an eight day rack striking movement, striking the hours on a cast bell. With pendulum and weights. Notes: The Sprat family were prolific Irish clockmakers working in Ireland during the 18th and 19th century, William first working in Ardmillan (Ireland) then Saintfield d1848. A George III inlaid oak brass dial longcase clock, the arched hood with three brass finials, the door with chequer stringing and flanked by fluted full columns, the trunk with arched door flanked by canted corners inlaid with conforming chequer stringing, the plain base box raised on a shaped foot, the 12" brass dial with silvered chapter ring having Roman hour and Arabic minute tracks, silvered subsidiary seconds and a calendar aperture, moulded spandrels to the corners and dolphin spandrels flanking a classical medallion to the arch, the eight-day four pillar movement striking on a bell, with two weights and pendulum 46cm wide x 20cm deep x 222cm high.Dial silvering worn. Pendulum stem detached from bob and lacking suspension spring and so clock has not been tested running. Movement appears sound and does wind and strike. Case and hood has some shrinkage splits to boards, especially to trunk door and right side of base box. Some minor chips and small losses in places. General cosmetic marks throughout consistent with age and use.

A George III inlaid oak and mahogany painted dial longcase clock, by Inigo Smith of Wrexham, the hood with swan-neck pediment and door flanked by fluted full columns, the trunk with shaped cross-banded door flanked by fluted quarter column pilasters, the base box with cross-banded panel, the 13" dial having black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, painted with two castle vignettes and flower spandrels, the four-pillar eight-day movement striking on a bell, with pendulum and two weights, 51cm wide x 23cm deep x 204cm high.Pendulum stem has snapped and has no suspension spring, consequently the clock has not been seen to run or tested for timekeeping. Movement appears in good order and does wind and strike, seconds and calendar advance correctly. Dial appears good with typical faint cracklure throughout and some wear/chipping to the paint on the outer edges. Hood lacking central finial, probably originally brass. Base box lacking foot or feet. Case overall fair to good with some cosmetic marks consistent with age and use. Left hand cornice beneath hood has a small loss to the front corner and there is a small chip to the top of the trunk door. A latch has been added to keep the trunk door closed. There is no door key or winder with this clock.

Overall - ok and nicely figured case. Lacking winder. Not operational in vendor's home.

The movement backplate is engraved with the name of the maker of the clock and dated 1762, a rare and unusual feature seldom found on longcase clocks. Clock winds, but currently isn't ticking and will likely require some attention. The dial has been cleaned with some form of fluid that has discoloured it. The hood is missing its glass. The pendulum bob must be treated carefully as the mercury cover is moveable, therefore some minor balling appearing around the exterior of the bob. Case is subject to light age related wear. No makers mark. Additional images now available.Back of hood door would likely have had some component keeping glass in pace, though no longer.
