Wain, Alfreton (Derbyshire), the 13-inch break arch dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes framing subsidiary seconds dial and calendar crescent, signed beneath, within rose spandrels and arch painted with a lady seated on a bank with basket of eggs, the movement rack-striking on a bell, the case with swan neck pediment, turned column, shaped short trunk door between fluted corners, and unusual geometric panelled base, 218cm high Condition: General crazing and discolouration to dial including some losses to blacking on numerals. Movement untested and sold as seen. One replacement disc terminal to swan neck pediment, cracks and repairs to both swan necks, minor cracking to hood door and missing its knob handle. William IV or early Victorian mahogany-cased eight-day painted dial longcase clock, Henry Pottle, Winchester, (fl.1830-67), the twelve-inch circular Roman dial signed 'Hen'y Pottle Winchester', with subsidiary seconds dial beneath XII, with five-pillar movement, the case with foliate scroll-carved hood and ebony line inlay over figured break-arched trunk door, panelled base and wavy apron, 206cm high Condition: Dial has minor staining and some crazing including visible impacts to front from dial feet pressing to reverse. Movement appears sound but is untested and sold as seen. Case has some minor losses to pierced circular sound frets to sides of hood. One side panel of trunk has a circular disc adornment. Otherwise sound. Brass lantern-style clock, the 6.5-inch silvered Roman dial with inner quarter track and half-hour divisions, engraved 'Luke Gray Shastone Fecit', the movement with anchor escapement and wheels of four crossings, with pinned side doors, the case with strapped bell surmount and pierced dolphin cresting on turned supports, 35cm high, together with a carved dark oak case of 'longcase clock' form, the open hood with shaped side wings, 192cm high Condition: This maker is apparantly un recorded, although there were a famiuly of clock makers called Gray at Shaston (Shaftesbury, Dorset) This clock maybe a replica of a late 17th/early 18th Century example using some original parts. The bell is oversized for this type of clock and the strap surmounts are atypical. Some staining and slight losses to numerals of chapter ring. Disc holding hands in place is clearly of a later date. Most parts of mechanisim appear sound, however this lot is untested and sold as seen. The case would appear to be carved in the late 19th century and like the clock itself includes some earlier timbers. Sold with eight day-style clock weight, plus brass-faced pendulem, the feather is missing its pin. LATE REGENCY MAHOGANY, EBONY, AND BRASS INLAID MANTEL CLOCK, BY MOLYNEUX, LONDON EARLY 19TH CENTURY the arched case enclosing a cream enamelled dial with Roman numerals, with rubbed maker’s marks, above a brass-lined and inlaid panel flanked by brass flower basket ring handles, above a brass star-inlaid base, raised on a plinth; the twin-train eight-day movement striking a bell, the back plate signed MOLYNEUX/ LONDON (24cm wide, 36cm high, 15cm deep) Footnote: Provenance : The Earls of Crawford and Balcarres, Balcarres House, Fife, Scotland Note : It is unknown when exactly Robert Molyneux came to London to be a pupil of the famous watchmaker Thomas Earnshaw, but around 1800 he went on to establish his own business, and in 1805 he was asked to be an adjudicator on Earnshaw’s inventions, a sign that his skills were highly valued. By the mid-1840s Molyneux had won the first place in the Premium Trials three times, a competition instituted by the Board of Longitude to encourage makers to introduce improvements to chronometers, and his products were used by the British Navy. Although the major part of Molyneux’s business was concerned with watches and chronometers, he also made longcase regulators and some bracket clocks, like the example in this lot.
An early 19th century oak longcase clock, with painted dial and two train striking movement and with three quarter length trunk door and conforming base raised on splayed bracket feet. CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is generally very clean. The only issue with the hood is that the glass is cracked. The painted dial is a little rubbed in places but is in generally reasonably good condition. We have two weights and a pendulum. We have not had the clock ticking, however if weight is applied to the going train it appears to operate. The trunk door is not warped. The sides of the case are in good order. The base panel has a shrinkage crack between the two boards that form the front. The front left bracket foot is partially missing. The backboards are original.
A Scottish mahogany longcase clock by Howden of Edinburgh, with circular dial, long trunk door flanked by fluted quarter column corners, with two-train striking movement, with pendulum and weights. Height 204 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The dial diameter is 32 cm. The hood is generally very good order and of good colour. The brass bezel is original and also in good condition. The movement appears to be complete and as stated we have the pendulum and two weights. We have not had the movement running as the feather to the pendulum is missing. When weight is applied to both trains the movement does appear to strike and tick. The face has blemishes around the pillars and some paint loss. The trunk door has a minor nibble to one door point. There is also a small loss to the top left-hand corner and top right. The door is however not warped, closes as it should and locks. The sides of the case are in good condition. The base is missing part of the bottom edge moulding and the right-hand return moulding. There are some stress fractures to the sides of the base and some old marks and scratches.
An Edwardian inlaid mahogany longcase clock, with silvered brass dial and Arabic numerals and three train spring driven striking movement with long arched trunk door and raised on bracket feet. Height 201 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The hood and case are in very good condition with no significant issues. The colour is good. The trunk door is not warped and there are no significant scuffs, marks or scratches. The door to the hood is currently locked and we do not have a key. The movement is currently ticking away, we have the pendulum. The movement is spring and not weight driven therefore there are no weights. The movement is fully wound on two trains and whilst it is currently ticking away it is not striking when advanced. The silvered brass dial is dirty and the chimes silent lever is missing.
A George II oak longcase clock circa 1751-5, with thirty hour movement by Richard Stephen, Bridgnorth, with 10" dial and single pointer and housed in a later but stylistically correct case. Height 193.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This clock is in generally extremely good condition. We have the weight and pendulum and it is currently ticking away as it should. The movement is clean. The dial is in good order. The case is in extremely good condition with no issues. The door is not warped and we have the lock and key.
