The dial of the current lot is illustrated in Moore, Rice & Hucker BILBIE & THE CHEW VALLEY CLOCKMAKERS on page 343. The use of single-sheet dials by some of the Chew Valley clockmakers predates the general fashion by around 20 years, the earliest known example by a member of the Bilbie family being on a thirty-hour longcase clock by William Bilbie of Axbridge who died in 1767.

The five-pillar rack and bell striking movement with knurled calibrated rating nut and large lenticular bob to the steel rod pendulum supported from the substantial back-cock, the 12 inch single-sheet silvered brass Roman numeral break-arch dial with subsidiary seconds and calendar dials and signed GRANT Fleet Street, LONDON No. 365 to centre, with Arabic five minutes and plain spandrels beneath arch with STRIKE/SILENT dial, the break-arch case with brass stop-fluted pilasters to hood above break-arch trunk door flanked by conforming brass-mounted fluted quarter columns to angles, on raised shaped panel fronted plinth base with double skirt incorporating shaped apron and bracket feet, 222cm high. John Grant is recorded as working in Fleet Street 1786-1810. He was apprenticed to and later went into partnership with his uncle the renowned clock and chronometer maker Alexander Cumming who, along with other eminent makers such as Thomas Mudge, was appointed by the board of longitude to assess Harrison’s marine timekeepers.

A rare oak cased Earth-driven electric longcase clock Bentley Manufacturing Company, Leicester, circa 1910. The visible skeletonised movement with six-spoke wheel crossings and rear mounted escape wheel with locking and impulse pallets linked to the steel rod pendulum with substantial brass encased coil oscillating over a fixed curved bar magnet and cylindrical bob to lower section and electrical switchgear mounted onto brackets signed EARTH DRIVEN ELECTRICAL CLOCK No.172, BENTLEY’S PATENT 19044/10, MFC’D LEICESTER ENGLAND to shaft, the 12 inch dial with silvered chapter ring and subsidiary seconds dial to the open centre, with full-height bevel arch glazed front door to the Arts & Crafts influence case with shaped crest and moulded cornice, on plinth base, 206cm high. Percival Arthur Bentley filed his patent (19044) on 13th August 1910. The clock was originally powered by an earth battery comprising a zinc and carbon couple buried in damp soil which provided approximately 1 volt at the terminals (the current lot contains a conversion box to enable the clock to be run from a standard D-sized cell). It is generally thought that no more than around 70 such clocks were ever made as the Company changed its production at the onset of the First World War. The scarcity of these clocks is further compounded by the fact that a consignment bound for the USA was lost with the sinking of the Titanic. The current lot was loaned to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery Department of Science and Industry in 1959 where it remained until relatively recently. A file relating the history of the clock, including photographs of it in situ at the Museum, are included in the lot.

A George III mahogany thirty-hour longcase clock Joseph Quarman, Temple Cloud, late 18th century The four- pillar outside countwheel bell-striking movement with 12 inch square brass dial with recessed subsidiary seconds dial, arched calendar aperture and signed JOSEPH QUARMAN Temple Cloud to the foliate engraved centre within an applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes and fleur de lys half hour markers, the angles with scroll cast spandrels, the case with swan neck pediment and turned hood pilasters above rectangular trunk door flanked by reeded canted angles, on plinth base with moulded skirt, 209cm high. Joseph Quarman is recorded in Moore, A.J. The Clockmakers of Somerset 1650-1900 as working from 1729, however Moore, Rice & Hucker speculate in Bilbie and The Chew Valley Clockmakers that there may well have been two makers of this name as there is a Parish record of the burial of a Joseph Quarman in 1793.

The five finned pillar (centre latched) outside countwheel bell-striking movement with 12 inch square brass dial with scroll engraved calendar aperture, subsidiary seconds dial and ringed winding holes to the matted centre, within an applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes, stylised sword hilt half hour markers and signed Peter Garon, London to lower edge, the angles with twin cherub and crown cast spandrels within a herringbone border to edge, the case with foliate fret to the moulded entablature above scroll inlaid hood door with integral columns, the trunk with decorated throat moulding above rectangular lenticle centred trunk door profusely inlaid with scrolling foliage and strapwork within conforming surround, the plinth with ogee top moulding and conforming marquetry panel within laurel border, on moulded skirt base, 216cm high. Peter Garon is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as being admitted to the Clockmakers Company in 1687. He worked firstly from St Bartholomew’s Lane and later St Giles, Cripplegate and was declared bankrupt in 1709. Two clocks of the same marquetry pattern are illustrated in Bruton, Eric The Wetherfield Collection of Clocks page 165 (Joseph Windmills) and 179 (Jonathan Lowndes). Both of these examples have caddy upstands, however the construction of the hood and profile of the cornice mouldings suggests that the current Lot was supplied in its current form.

Edward Greatrex is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World Volume II as working in Birmingham circa 1750.

This clock was probably made by a relative of Daniel Gill who is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in Rye circa 1797.

Joseph Herring is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as being Liveryman of the Clockmakers Company in 1767. It is possible that this clock was made either by Joseph earlier in his career (as a Freeman of the Clockmakers Company) or perhaps by Joshua Herring who worked from 1742 to 1763.

Seat board replaced. 2.05m overall. Note: The Waldfogel business clearly had Germanic connections and this clock brings together the styles of English and German clock making of the mid-19th century. The case is earlier.
