The finials appear to be a  later addition as does the mount for the top finial at the head of the case.  Likewise the case shows some signs of repair to the veneer finish and re-finishing in general. The dial itself appears original, however it is very dirty but the baton numerals are clear and concise.  The hands appear original and the gilded parts to the perimeter are intact and fresh.  The centre of the dial itself has some speckled markings which may or may not clean off.  Internally the weights are present but the stringing appears to be incorrect and non-original.  The glass to the cabinet is in good condition showing no obvious signs of cracks or chips.  However the front door does have a significant crack at the 11 o'clock position and the 2 o'clock position and appears to have had some previous repair.  The mechanism appears intact but the clock has not been tested.

These repairs appear to be historic rather than recent.  The brasswork to the top and the finial appear to be original and are in good condition, likewise the columns are nicely reeded and the gilding is intact to both top and bottom of the column.  The door is a good fit and the lock appears to be original as do the hinges.  The weights and pendulum are present with the clock. The painted dial is in good condition, appearing to be original, however the gilding may have been refreshed.  Again this is historic rather than recently. The Roman baton numerals are clear and concise and the hands appear original.  The door fits snugly and the glass appears to be original rather than a later replacement.  The hood appears to be in good condition and whilst the finial is present it is a poor fit.  The mechanism is complete, appears to be intact however the clock should be regarded as untested.

Lot 774

An 18th Century Oak Longcase Clock, by Wilmshurst of Deal, the 12ins square brass dial with wide chapter ring with Roman numerals and single hand, to the thirty hour movement striking on a bell, contained in plain oak case with shaped cresting and turned and fluted pillars to hood, 81ins high Note: Thomas Wilmshurst, Deal, Kent recorded as apprenticed 1713, retired 1764, died 1777.Condition ReportExternally the case appears to be in excellent overall condition showing no obvious sign of previous damage or repair.  The hood again appears original. The glass is intact and free from any visible scratches or chips and appears to be the original glass. The hinges appear original and function correctly.  The latch is present but no key so cannot be tested. The pediment is fitted for finials which are not present.  The reeded columns appear to be potentially a later addition. The mechanism  itself is somewhat dirty but appears to be complete, however it should be regarded as not tested. The weights and pendulum are present and appear to be original.  The hood latch is present but not attached. The single hand dial appears original and shows no obvious sign of restoration. The signature is easily read, however one fretted panel to the top left hand side requires re-fixing. Overall a clean honest example.

Lot 775

An 18th Century Oak Longcase Clock by Chaplin of Ashby (de-la Zouch), the 12ins square brass dial with silvered chapter ring, with Roman numerals, to the eight day two train movement striking on a bell, in associated oak and mahogany case with moulded scroll pediment and turned and fluted pillars to hood, shaped trunk door crossbanded in mahogany and inlaid with ovoid shell motif, conforming plinth base, 84ins high Note: Chaplin of Ashby recorded as a clock maker circa 1750Condition ReportExternally the case appears to have been subject to some refreshment over the years, showing signs of repolishing. The base to the finial appears to be a later restoration, however the finial appears correct and likewise the other decoration. The plinth is in good condition, likewise the dial. The gilding to the dial is in excellent condition. The hands are bright and may be a later replacement and the gilding to the centre of the dial is showing some mottled patination in general. The glass is in good condition and shows no obvious signs of cracks or chips. The front door has numerous cracks round the perimeter to the veneer and two particularly notable ones near the closing latch. The pendulum is present and appears original, likewise the winding handle. Enclosed with the item to the interior is a receipt dated June 2009 listing repairs in the nature of a full service including bushings, repairs to the pendulum, dial married up to the movement of the clock, repaired the plate of the dial, removed gold paint and polished, chapter ring, filled black numerals and replaced missing screws, resilvered and lacquered. Lot 781

A 19th Century Oak Longcase Clock by William Hayler of Chatham, the 12ins painted metal dial with Arabic numerals and subsidiary seconds dial, floral decorated spandrels to the eight day two train movement striking on a bell, in a case with moulded dentil cornice and turned columns to hood, shaped trunk door and plinth base, on bracket feet, 81ins high Note: William Hayler recorded working Chatham early 19th CenturyCondition ReportThe condition of the case itself is good, the pendulum is present, the mechanism appears complete, however the clock should be regarded as untested. Externally it appears to be in good overall condition, however the varnish has been refreshed at some point in recent years. The brass work is present and correct and is polished. The columns are likewise in good condition and there is no damage to the dentil course. The hood itself is fine, no real sign of repair apart from some rubbing of the lower hinge to the case. The glass appears to be original and the putty original. The hinges are in good condition and are original. The painted dial is in nice condition, showing light wear and abrasions commensurate with age and usage, overall legible and the hands appear original. The mechanism appears to be intact but is not clean and should be regarded as untested. The hinges to the front door appear to be original and in good condition. The weight and pendulum are present. Overall an honest example that has had some 'refreshing' in recent years.

Lot 785

A Late 18th Century Mahogany Longcase Clock by Thomas Iles of London, the 12ins arched brass dial with silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals, recessed subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture with matted dial centre, strike/silent dial to arch, to the eight day two train movement striking on a bell, in a case with swept pagoda top and brass finials above moulded arch and turned and fluted and brass stopped columns to hood, arched trunk door with raised edge mouldings, flanked by fluted and brass stopped quarter columns, the plinth base with raised and moulded centre panel on shaped apron and bracket feet, 92ins high Note: Thomas Iles recorded working London 1778-90Condition ReportExternally the clock appears to be in good condition showing no obvious sign of previous damage or repair, however the external finishing appears to have been refreshed in recent years, the columns are correct and the brass work is correct and two brass finials are present. The hood is in good condition and the glass appears original, the hinges to the hood are original and show no obvious sign of previous repair. The dial is crisp and the Roman numerals may have been refreshed. The mechanism is clean and appears complete however the clock should be regarded as untested. The pendulum and weights are present. The door to the case is in good condition however the hinges have been adjusted and may be a later replacement but are in good keeping with the rest of the clock. The seal board of the movement appears to be original, if not it is from period timber, but in our opinion it is original and still bears a trade label. Inside the cheeks of the case there are two blocks which guide the hood into position, likewise these appear to be original as do the nails which attach them. The previous owner of the clock is known to us and it is known that the clock was sent away and subject to an expensive restoration to the movement and case so it should be considered as restored but in a very sympathetic manner.

Lot 786

A Late 17th/ Early 18th Century Walnut and Marquetry Longcase Clock, by James Clowes of London, the 10ins square brass dial with silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, to the eight day two train five pillar movement striking on a bell, contained in ebonised and walnut case with moulded cornice, split spiral turned columns to hood, trunk inlaid with bird and floral marquetry, on plinth base with bun feet, 77.75ins high Note: James Clowes, born 1643, died 1706, was a member of the Clockmakers Company from 1671-1705Condition ReportExternally the clock appears to be in good overall condition showing some sign of historic cracking to the veneer in general.  All the veneer appears to be present and free from any obvious sign of previous damage or repair.  The rising hood is in good condition as are the twisted columns and brass work.  The top of the hood is showing three distinct holes for finials or a pediment, neither of which are present. Likewise the top of the hood also appears to have had a replacement wooden panel but not recently. The interior of the hood shows original patination and the three glasses appear to be original and set in the original putty.  The wood supporting the mechanism of the clock appears to be a later replacement.  The mechanism is clean and bright and has been restrung fairly recently.  The mechanism appears to be intact and functions correctly but should be regarded as not tested. The dial itself is clean and bright and appears to have had some retouching in certain minor areas but is crisp. We believe the minute hand may be a replacement.  The silver chapter ring appears to be original showing some slight discolouration and wear commensurate with age and usage.  The interior of the case appears original and shows a nice patination of age.  The weights appear original.  The hinges are likewise original and the glass to the front of the case.  The marquetry is in fine order showing no obvious sign of any missing component. The base appears to be original however it has a crack through the middle of the marquetry panel of approximately 10ins running from right to left.  The feet appear to be original.   We believe the case may have been subject to some historic restoration, mostly to the base at the rear. Overall an honest example that may have seen some refreshment over the years.
