A good late 17th century seaweed marquetry inlaid longcase clockJohn Westoby, London The rising hood with overhanging cornice above a repousse brass sound fret raised on spirally twisted columns with giltwood capitals and bases, over a long door with three shaped panels of symmetrical scroll inlay centred by an oval lenticle, the trunk sides inlaid with boxwood and ebony geometric panels, on a matching base. The case front inlaid all over with running foliate inlay, raised on bun feet. The 11 inch square brass dial with winged cherubs head spandrels framing the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with cross half-quarter marks, minute and quarter tracks, signed John Westoby Londini fecit, finely matted centre with subsidiary seconds, ringed winding squares and decorated date aperture. The movement with five knopped and finned pillars, anchor escapement and inside countwheel striking on the bell, the two lower pillars locating into vertical pins on the (later) seatboard. Together with a pendulum, crank winder and two brass weights. 2m (6ft 7ins) high. A very rare first half of the 19th century mahogany year-going centre-seconds longcase clockA. Crawshaw, Rotherhamthe case surmounted by a pierced scroll cresting over a deep concave moulded cornice, the bezel with a crossbanded border over a long trunk door of good figuring and matching crossbanded border, to a tall base on double apron. The 14 inch signed silvered Roman and Arabic dial with good matching hands, the minute and seconds hand both counter-balanced. The substantial shouldered movement united by four heavy turned pillars, each (smooth) barrel driving the six-wheel train terminating in a deadbeat escapement, the wooden-rod pendulum with fine screw adjustment. Together with two very substantial rectangular lead weights, each weighing approximately 57lbs (26kg) 2.2m (7ft 2.5ins) high.Footnotes:Andrew Crawshaw was born in 1779, the son of a clockmaker. He married in 1800 and died at the age of 65. A late 17th century marquetry inlaid walnut and ebonised longcase clock with ten inch dialRichard Baker, LondonThe hood with stepped overhanging cornice on a blind-cut fret supported on graduated tightly twisted columns to a convex throat moulding, the long trunk door inlaid with a bird among bold flowers including tulips, peonies, lilies and carnations picked out in different woods emanating from a central vase, framed by a D-moulded edge and centred by a circular lenticle, the lower part of the door similarly inlaid, on a base with similar inlaid panel in a banded border, on squat bun feet. The ten inch square brass dial with single line border and elaborate winged cherubs head spandrels interspersed by foliate engraving, signed along the lower edge in a florid script Richard Baker, Londini fecit, Roman and Arabic chapter ring with fancy half-hour markers gently incised by the subsidiary seconds dial, over a flowerhead engraved centre and chamfered date aperture. The movement with five knopped and ringed pillars, anchor escapement and inside countwheel striking to a large vertical bell set on an upright post on the frontplate. A rare late 18th century architectural mahogany longcase clockVulliamy, London, number 213. The case with architectural triangular pediment set on freestanding brass-mounted fluted columns to the front and quarter columns to the rear, the long trunk door of exceptional colour and figure framed by a fine moulded edge, on a matching base with applied panel and double apron on block feet. The one-piece 12 inch square silvered dial with strike/not strike lever to the top edge and punched number 213 to the lower right hand corner, engraved Roman and Arabic chapters with original steel hands (seconds hand replaced) and date aperture. The weight driven movement with four substantial knopped pillars (central fifth pillar now lacking), anchor escapement driving a long steel crutch with brass pins, and rack striking on a bell, to a wooden rod pendulum (rod in need of minor repair) terminating in a sharp-edged brass-clad lenticular heavy bob. Together with the pair of brass-clad weights, wooden rod pendulum rod (old and current breakages), brass pendulum bob, two pulleys. 2.18m (7ft 2ins) high. 19th century mahogany drum head eight day two train longcase clock having painted face with Roman numerals, seconds and date dials, the waist with moulded pilasters and convex door on a panelled base. Possibly Scottish. Complete with pendulum and two weights. (B.P. 21% + VAT) Casw is Grubby but seems sound. Appears complete, movement seems to have been restored as fairly shiny. Face is flaking and has been poorly restored , bezel is detached and has no glass.
