Sunderland copy.- Caesar (Gaius Julius) De bello Gallico commentarii VII, title with woodcut printer's device, 8pp. woodcuts at start, ¶¶4, S6 and Qq8 blank, small worm trace to inner gutter of first few sigs., some marginal water-staining, some spotting or mostly light foxing, occasional light staining, lightly browned, antique style calf, spine in compartments, spine faded, rubbed and marked, [Adams C56], a wide-margined copy, folio, Lyon, Barthélemy Vincent, 1574.⁂ Provenance: Charles Spencer, Third Earl of Sunderland (bold ink shelf-mark 'D3:66' to front free endpaper); S.O. Money (his initialed ink note 'Bought at the Sunderland sale 1881, lot 2208' (then bound in vellum); 'Purchased from Alan Thomas in 1970s' (pencil note to front free endpaper).
Chatsworth copy.- Cicero (Marcus Tullius) Brutus, seu De claris oratoribus, liber, title within attractive woodcut criblé historiated border, woodcut decorative initial, final f. blank and with contemporary ink notes verso, some marginal water-staining, occasional spotting or light staining, lightly browned, 19th century polished blind-stamped and gilt calf, rebacked, preserving original backstrip in compartments (chipped), lower cover all but detached, rubbed, [Renouard, Colines, 242; Schreiber, Colines, 128], 8vo, Paris, Simon de Colines, 1535.⁂ A charming little edition. Provenance: Dukes of Devonshire (Chatsworth bookplate to front pastedown, with shelf mark '140 F' in pencil).

A mahogany square piano by Masterman & Company, circa 1820, 5 1/2 octave keyboard, manuscript serial no. 976 and initials JM internally, satinwood fascia board with painted floral decoration and manufacturer's name within cartouche inscribed 'Masterman & Compy., No. 100 Hatton Garden, London', soundboard also with early inscription 'From Japes, Old Kent Rd., London', mahogany case with ebony string detail, on stand with four tapering legs terminating in brass caps and castors, pedal present (without rod attachment), with later shelf to stand, width 168 cm, depth 60.5 cm, height 85 cmQTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: The David & Sarah Battie Collection.Ivory Act registration reference: D2XSEEKY.We have been unable to locate the firm of Masterman & Co. at 100 Hatton Garden, however, a firm called Masterman & Co. is listed in Robson London Directory for 1830 at Canal Warfs.
