Fairbairn's first published book, produced as a result of investigations he carried out in 1829 and 1830 for the Forth & Clyde Canal Co., which wanted to improve transportation in the face of growing competition from the railway. Fairbairn advocated the use of steam as against horse power, and, for the first time, considered the use of iron for ships. His first iron vessel, ‘Lord Dundas', which he built for the Forth & Clyde Co., is described and illustrated here. Fairbairn went on to play a major role in the development of iron ship-building. (1)
