The Overland Monthly, volume 1. Published 1868 by A. Roman and Company. The first volume contains all four of Twain's contributions to this journal, all first printings, which appeared in the first four issues ('By Rail Through France,' 'A Californian Abroad,' 'A Medieval Romance,' and 'Three Italian Cities.') The second issue contains the first printing of Harte's most famous story, 'The Luck of the Roaring Camp. The first one and a half years of this magazine were edited by Bret Harte. Other major contributors include Ina Coolbrith, Charles Warren Stoddard, and Edward Rowland Sill. Bound in brown leather with a lighter brown over covering and corner tabs. The leather is gilt stamped on the covers, spine titles and decorations between ribs with edges a light red tone. Approximate Dimensions:h. 9.25", w. 6.25", d. 1.5"Condition:The covers show little wear with some shelf rubbing showing on the highest parts of the hinge. A Georgian Oak Bookcase, with moulded cornice, fitted six shelves enclosed by a pair of astragal glazed doors, on plinth base, 47ins wide x 14ins deep x 83ins highTo the top of the cornice on all three front edges there are edge knocks and general rubbing, to each side and the base there is general scattered scratching and darker staining and the front is unevenly faded. There is heavier dirt and filth build up between all of the mouldings of the glazing. Key is present and locking mechanisms work however it is slightly warped at the higher end of the right door. Heavier darker scratching and water marks to each shelf. Overall the item is structurally sound with some movement in the joints and to the back right hand edge and left hand edge there are some more extensive edge knocks and timber loss. General heavier wear to the base commensurate with age. Overall the item is in fair condition.

On all four edges of the top there is some slight rubbing, and in the centre on the left-hand side there is a small area of wear to the veneer. General heavy wear to the base commensurate with age. Overall the spinning mechanism runs freely and so do the castors It appears to be in a good overall condition with no real areas of damage, loss or restoration

The front corner is repaired, the underside has various repairs visible also (see images). The timber is rather dry, with shrinkage splits on the cupboard doors, particularly to the left-hand door.

The first five pages include an etched print of George Washington, two of Mount Vernon and one of Washington's Tomb. Also, tipped in is a two page pamphlet advertising the book. Approximate Dimensions:h.13.75, w.9.25Condition:Boards have some shelf wear with rounded corners with some staining and spotting. First and third pages have some doodling with foxing and toning throughout. Page 66 is torn out leaving a partial page, one page after that ends the book.
