A BLUE AND GILT-JAPANNED AND CHINESE LACQUER CABINET ON STAND 17TH/18TH CENTURY The lacquer 18th century, incorporating refreshment to the japanning, the two door cabinet depicting birds in watery and hilly landscapes and waterside pavilions, the interior and back with black and gilt lacquer derived from panels of a Chinese screen, on a George II stand carved with foliage, the frieze centred by a shell and hung with drapery swags, the acanthus-wrapped legs headed by lion masks and with hairy paw feet 115cm wide, 169cm high overall, 55cm deep Condition Report: Generally good, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are the inevitable minor dents marks and scratches. The japanned front and sides with extensive repair, notably to the raised decoration of the bird, buildings and leaves on the doors, and to a lesser degree the birds on the right side (the left side appears to be fairly well preserved) . The japanning has a varnished surface overall (probably later to consolidate the repairs) and there is a cracquelure reminiscent of vernis Martin japanning of the 19th century. The lacquer with typical cracking/crazing, especially so on the back which is quite badly distressed. The cabinet was never fitted other than possibly with a shelf. The stand has been stripped, originally probably gilded or even silvered, there are traces of white gesso and it has a slightly `hairy' surface. It also appears to have been altered (reduced slightly) in size with some consequent later/re-carving, for instance the rosettes at each end of the frieze appear to be added and there is clear glue visible in some of the joints.
