A Voyage of Discovery and Research in the Southern and Antarctic Regions, During the Years 1839-43, first edition in two volumes, 8vo, London: John Murray 1847, inscribed to first fly-leaf by the author to the Reverend Professor [Adam] Sedgwick, with plates and maps as called for though Vol.I Ch.II title page printed without the vignette Entrance to Christmas Harbour, and Vol.II p.329 map differs from that stated in the list of plates and maps, folding map at end of Vol.II with small tear, 16pp adverts at end of Vol. II, general marginal browning, frequent pencil underlining and marginal marks very probably by Sedgwick whose signature appears twice in Vol.II, and with his notes to the final endpaper, with Raymond Priestleys British Antarctic Expedition Terra Nova R.Y.S. printed bookplates , and Thomas McKenny Hughess name and initials in ink to first free end papers, both titles with old ink shelf numbers, both volumes in age-worn publishers cloth with gilt ship motifs, some damages with loss to head and foot of spines particularly to Vol.I, hinges split, spines somewhat faded, otherwise a rare and important set associated with the famous geologists Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873) in whose honour the geological museum at Cambridge was later renamed, Thomas McKenny Hughes (1832-1917) Woodwardian Professor of Geology at Cambridge University, and Sir Raymond Priestley who served as geologist with the Shackleton Expedition 1907-1909 and with the Scott Expedition 1910-12
