Binding. L' Office de la Semaine-Sainte, … l'usage de Rome et de Paris. EnLatin & en Fran‡ois. Avec l'explication des C‚r‚monies de l'Eglise, Et des Instructions, Prieres & courtes R‚flexions sur les Myst‚res & Offices que l'on c‚l‚bre dans cette Sainte Semaine, Par Monsieur l'Abe‚ de Bellegarde, Paris: Jacques Collombat, 1732, engraved frontispiece (with blind stamp to lower margin), additional engraved title, four engraved plates, woodcut head & tailpieces, decorative initials, lower outer corner of b1 torn, red ruled margins throughout volume, marbled endpapers with 20th century bookplate of Karl Lachmann to upper pastedown, all edges gilt, contemporary full red morocco (in the manner of Antoine Michel Padeloup le Jeune, fl. 1712-1758), decorated with gilt pointille, floral & foliage decoration, within interlaced fanfare ribbon strapwork design, centre of each board with gilt arms of Louis XIV, discreet repairs at head & foot of spine and to board corners, 8vo The central decorative design appears to occur exactly on other examples of bindings from the period. It appears the design may have been applied via a block or plate, thus enabling the decoration to be applied relatively quickly, whilst mantaining quality and accuracy. A similar example of this design can be found on a 1743 edition of the same work at the British Library (shelf C47g5). (1)
