Street added a chapel to his previous commission, Cuddesdon College near Oxford (1853). At the same time, he designed and supplied a suite of ebonised and gilt bookcases for the library, and, although it is not known for which commission the current lot was made, this hanging bookcase follows their design. As with most architects of the time, the re-use of a successful design for other commissions was commonplace.

OLeinen mit RTitel und illustriertem OSchutzumschlag. Düsseldorf, Art-Press, 1970.Parr and Badger II, 266. 802 Photobooks, S. 518. Open Book, S. 258-9. Roth, Book of 101 Books. - Erste Ausgabe. "The extensive series that the Bechers later made for Schirmer/Mosel and MIT Press, while preserving the aesthetic rigour of their earlier work, emphasizes the documentary aspect, and has a particular archival, historical value. Anonyme Skulpturen, though it hardly neglects the informational importance of their practice, seems much more about making an aesthetic statement and establishing the artists' position in late twentieth-century art. All their books are polemical, but this represents their primary artistic credo. For those who are more interested in the Bechers as artists than as industrial archaeologists, this is the one to have on one's shelf." (Parr-Badger). - Frisches Exemplar. Titelblatt mit Besitzvermerk von Wilmar Koenig ("Mai 1986"). - Dabei: Bernd und Hilla Becher. Hochöfen. 15 S. Mit 223 fotograf. Abb. auf Tafeln. 29 x 22,5 cm. OLeinen mit OSchutzumschlag. The lower cupboards have a single shelf internally.
Joined oak pantry cupboard, 19th Century, cavetto cornice, the upper section with two panelled doors, the base with two drawers over to further doors, ogee feet (a.f.), width 150cm, depth 53cm, height 238cm.Condition report:The right hand edging of the cornice is loose. There is only the moulding to the front right foot, the left foot is missing (just standing on the block). The rear supports probably never had moulding. The upper cupboards have two additional shelves (one shown in the cupboard, the other out) with large later block supports added to the inner sides for them to rest on. The drawers are not on any runners and so are very loose in the housing. The lower cupboards also have a shelf. The lower boards of the lower cupboards show historic heavy worm activity, but none evident elsewhere. Both sides have numerous holes drilled into them, some with existing screws sticking out. A heavy scratch scar across the front of the right hand drawer. Discolouration throughout with years of hands opening/ closing. Colour fading to the base presumably through cleaning/ possibly water tide marks (if it once stood somewhere susceptible to flooding). It does retain a nice character.
