A 19th century mahogany bookcase, in two sections the top half with moulded cornice above a series of glazed doors with drawers beneath, the base fitted with a series of drawers and cupboards with brass drop handles with circular backplates and raised on a plinth base. Height 214 cm, width 135 cm, depth 60 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The bookcase is structurally sound and in generally reasonably good order. The cornice has some minor edge nibbles and small timber losses to the returns but no significant issues. The sides of the top are in generally good order. There are some old scuffs and dints but no real issues. The upper doors close flush and we have the keys to all three doors. The drawers all run smoothly. All three locks are present but we do not have any keys. The drawers are not locked. The shelf below the upper drawers has some surface marks and scratches but no real problems. The drawer fronts to the base are in generally good order with only minor losses to the cockbeading in places. All drawers have locks and we have a key which seems to lock some of the drawers. Some locks appear stiff but it is probably the same key. The cupboard doors are not warped, again we have the key to the lock which operates. The brass drop handles are replacements but cover the original handle holes. The lock escutcheons are probably replacements also as there is evidence of faint outlines of larger circular escutcheons. The base moulding is scuffed in places. The sides of the lower section have stress fractures to the mahogany. There is no evidence of any woodworm.
