TRADE MARK/ BETTY JOEL/ HOPKINS/ 1926 47.5cm wide, 82cm high, 31cm deep Provenance: Purchased directly from Betty Joel in 1926 By family descent Note: Hopkins was Betty Joel's workshop foreman and her most trusted cabinetmaker. The original receipt for this piece, dated October 14th 1926, states that 10% was added to the price for making up the pieces in 'Andoman Padouk'. Betty Joel set up her furniture making business in 1918 with her husband David Joel and initially has their workshops in factory at Hayling Island where these pieces would have been made. The firm rented a showroom at 177 Sloane Street in London. Such was the popularity of Joel’s designs that by 1929 the factory moved to bigger premises at Portsmouth. Many of England’s social and corporate elite commissioned her to design interiors and furniture for their homes and offices.
