Facetissimi Comoedie novem, edited by Jean Chéradame, 9 parts in 1, titles in Greek and Latin, text in Greek, titles within handsome woodcut historiated borders by Geoffrey Tory, woodcut historiated initials and printer's devices (the latter to 4 final ff.), 3 parts with early ink inter-linear notes, occasional spotting, particularly to final part, light marginal water-staining at head, contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, metal clasps, 19th century paper label to foot of spine, some soiling and staining, [Adams A1707; Mortimer, French, 38], small 4to, Paris, Pierre Vidoue for Gilles de Gourmont, 1528. ⁂ A very good copy of the handsomely printed first edition of Aristophanes to be printed in Paris. The editor Jean Chéradame was professor of Greek at the Collège du Roi. Each of the nine plays has a striking woodcut title by Geoffrey Tory, each incorporating the Adoration of the Magi, Gourmont's name and arms. There are separate dedicatees to each play, including Pierre Danes (first professor of Greek at the Collège Royal), Jean Ruel (botanist and physician and author of De Natura Stirpium, 1536), John Clerk (Bishop of Bath and Wells, chaplain of Cardinal Wolsey) and Thomas Winter (Wolsey's son). Provenance: 'Joh Jacobi...Linden...' (17th century ink inscription at head of title); Joseph von Lassberg (18th century ink inscription to front free endpaper); The Donaueschingen copy (shelf mark to foot of spine and head of inner pastedown).

A Tale, 3 vol., first edition, vol.1 with 16pp. publisher's catalogue dated October 1849, vol.3 with 3pp. Opinions of the Press at rear, vol.1 with ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper, bookplates to pastedowns, original cloth, a little shaken with some minor shelf-lean, spines slightly faded, spine ends and corners a little bumped and worn, some splitting to joints, light rubbing and marking, preserved in custom half morocco boxes with hinged lids, spines gilt, [Smith 5 pp.112-117], 8vo, Smith, Elder and Co., 1849. ⁂ Charlotte had begun writing Shirley in the spring of 1848, still buoyed by the success of Jane Eyre. Writing though would not come as easily to her as it did previously and progress was ultimately stalled by the crushing tragedy of loosing her three siblings in less than a year. Charlotte persevered however and the novel was published in October 1846. Provenance: Oliver Brett, Viscount Esher (armorial bookplate); H. Historiarum libri xxv, collation: ¶6, a-z6, aa-zz6, aaa-yyy6; [12], 792, [24] pp., Estienne's woodcut device on title, decorated initials at beginning of each book, head- and tail-pieces, some foxing and light water-staining, a few paper flaws, contemporary limp vellum with yapp edges, covers with large central fleuron and letters 'P N R' in gilt, smooth spine, title on lettering-piece (abraded), library shelf number at foot in gilt, soiled, some wear to corners, joints and yapp edges, folio (349 x 217mm.), [Geneva], Henri Estienne, 1592. ⁂ Second Estienne edition of the epitome of books XXXVI-LXXX of the Historiae Romanae, compiled in the 11th century by the monk Ioannes Xiphilinus on behalf of Emperor Michael VII. The work was first issued in 1551, from the Parisian press of Robert Estienne. In his preface to the 1592 edition Robert's son Henri mentions the previous edition published by his father on the basis of a Greek manuscript preserved in the Royal Library at Fontainebleau. In the Genevan volume the Greek text is now supplemented with its Latin translation, made by the German philologist Wilhelm Xylander, which first appeared in print in Basel in 1558. Some copies of this edition bear the imprint date 1591 on title. Provenance: 'Merrifiled Library July 17. 1883' (ownership inscription on verso of front flyleaf); Newcastle-upon-Tyne public library (bookplates on front endleaves and ink stamp on title). Literature: Adams D505 ("pagination, collation, and imprint as 1591"); Renouard, Estienne 155.5; Hoffmann I, 548 ("Auch Exx. mit 1592").

Here at ECCA we are honoured to of been chosen to offer for auction the “Steve Tandy” collection of Motorsport and Motorsport derived cars. This collection is the fruit of one mans labour, both in the Motorsport arena, where he has won multiple World, European and British championships and his private passion for fast cars. From a one owner “find” Ford Escort Cosworth, multi championship winning National Hot Rod cars, historic Ford Rally cars to big growling American V8 race cars there really is something from most forms of circuit or broken surface racing in the collection, offered here today!First up is this instantly recognisable and favourite of just about every teenager in the 80’s, 1987 Ford Sierra “Cosworth” affectionately known as a “Whale Tail Cossie”. These cars marked just about the end of the mad pursuit in the eighties by companies like Ford to be top dogs in the “Let’s take a boring family saloon car and turn it into a true performance car”game!! Alongside offerings from BMW, Audi and even Volvo. Somehow though it was Ford that captured most people’s imagination, all of a sudden the boring and mundane 1600cc Rep Mobile that you or your dad drove every day actually looked like the cars seen winning just about every saloon car race series in the country. You could even buy that OTT rear spoiler and bolt it on, if it did not actually make your car faster who cared it “looked” like it would be!!Body work is in great condition, it has not even been cleaned in the pictures. That is as it has been kept. Door shuts and body lines are excellent with no signs of repairs or impacts. Open the doors and the door steps and apertures all round are perfect with no rust or corrosion evident. This goes for the doors themselves as well. All the relevant body kit parts are present and correct and the aftermarket wheels are in good condition.Inside is excellent. The Recaro seats had a reputation for being “delicate” well not liking being sat on which is a bit inconvenient when you are a seat! Somehow, apart from some slight looseness of the front seat bases material, the seats in this car have survived very well. The dash is good with just one or two minor cracks that all Fords of this time suffered with. Not bad but there. All the original instruments are in place and working, even the original stereo is still fitted so no nasty big holes and poor wiring from badly fitted aftermarket stereos ( this is not tested at time of writing but will update once done so) The LCD clock works but has dimmed with time. Even the rear parcel shelf is there, slightly bowed from time if you open the rear hatch, but not noticeable when closed.Last on the road in 1997 this superb condition example should be recommissioned before being used, more as a precautionary thing and something anyone with any mechanical sympathy would do automatically. However it has regularly been run up during those years, its wheels have been rotated to stop any flat spotting and it has on the odd occasion been taken out for a drive, so it does start and run, gearbox clutch and transmission are fully functioning as are the brakes and all electrics.We all know how strong values of all Fast Fords are, with cars often changing hands multiple times and at a higher price each time. It is very rare for a “new” car to come to market such as this one as once in private collections they tend to stay there. Making this car an excellent opportunity for any serious collector or lover of “Blue Oval” cars.Note: The very rare and hard to find genuine work shop manuals are with the car.
