Pieter Brueghel d. J., 1564 Brüssel – 1637/38 AntwerpenDer BauernadvokatÖl auf Holz. Parkettiert.55,3 x 85 cm.Links unten signiert „P. Pieter Breughel Le Jeune – Jan Brueghel L‘Ancien, une famille de peintres flamands vers 1600, Kat.expo., Lingen 1998, S. 391.Ausstellungen:Art rules, Artlife project, Tallin, 2015. (1331383) (18)Pieter Brueghel the Younger,1564 Brussels – 1637/38 AntwerpThe Payment of the Tithes Oil on panel. Parquetted.55.3 x 85 cm.Signed “P.Breughel. 162(?)” lower left. The present painting is one of the most famous compositions by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, which has survived in multiple copies by his workshop and followers. Approximately 25 autograph works with the popular motif have survived, with the earliest dated version from 1615. The signed versions were all created between 1615 and 1630. Brueghel’s workshop offered two different formats, the smaller of which measures ca. 55 x 87 cm. The present painting, held in the same family for generations, had not been recorded prior to the 2010 auction at Christie’s and is one of the smaller variants of approx. 55 x 87 cm (here: 55 x 85cm). In accordance with Brueghel’s workshop practice, stencils were probably used for both formats, which guaranteed an exact duplication of the composition with a love of detail that was typical of Brueghel. The documents on the painting, some of which are written in French, refer to the “lingua franca” as the legal language of documents in the Netherlands at the time. The composition may have been created by Jan Brueghel the Younger and may be based on a painting by Nicolas Baullery (1560 – 1630). A lawyer is sitting in a large room behind his desk, which is overflowing with tied-up letters and an hourglass. He is wearing a dusky pink doublet and a black hat, reading a letter attentively. To his left is a farmer who seems to be explaining the contents of the document. To the right of the table is probably the lawyer’s assistant in a beige gown, boots and a wrinkled green stocking peeking out of it, which is partly reproduced in red in other versions of the picture. In front of the table, the country people with their products, including a duck, a bunch of grapes and a woman who is just filling a small basket with eggs. On the left edge of the painting is a man with a long stick and a red gown, which is sometimes shown in different colours in other versions. The numerous documents and labelled bags in the room are particularly striking. They lie or hang on a wall shelf behind the lawyer, on the floor and desk at the top left of the entrance with a seated assistant as well as the shelves behind him. The depiction is certainly meant to be satirical – this is indicated by an engraving published by Paulus Fürst in 1618, which accuses lawyers of taking bribes, since the corrupt lawyer can probably also be “paid” in kind. Partially restored, with retouching.
