A very rare creamware 'Admiral Lord Howe' Toby jug, circa 1785Modelled seated on a barrel, a recumbent spaniel at his feet and a long-stemmed pipe resting against the barrel, holding an empty jug in his left hand, a long pole in his right, his eyes and nose picked out in blue, wearing a green coat, ochre waistcoat and blue breeches, the base applied with four pegs each pierced with a hole, 24.9cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceWith Alistair Sampson AntiquesJames and Timmey Challenger Collection, ChicagoThe form of the base is most unusual and no other example with applied pegs appears to be recorded in the literature. Motor Vehicles and Motors by Worby Beaumont. Two-volumes published in London by Archibald Constable & Company Ltd. 1902. Volume 1, 2nd revised edition and Volume 2, 1906 1st ed. Large 8vo, approximately, 11 x 8 inches (275 x 200 mm), pages: Volume 1, xvi, 1-636 plus 2 folding tables; Volume 2, xvi, 1-677, well-illustrated with photographs and folding line drawings, publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Vol 1 binding a little rubbed, and Vol 2 has been sympathetically rebound in similar brown buckram. Given the nature of the books, the bindings are tight, creasing to top of spines and shelf wear to edges but not torn. Editorial pages are clean and presentable. (2)
