Charles Robert Ashbee (1863-1942) for the Guild of Handicraft Ltd., a rare Arts & Crafts silver dish, liner and spoon, London 1903, the hammered circular bowl with glass liner and elongated looping twin-wire handle set at the shoulder with a green chrysoprase cabochon, the spoon with elongated bowl and openwork terminal of stylised leaves and tendrils centred by another green chrysoprase cabochon 5 x 17.50cm (2 x 7in) This model of adish (sometimes called a porringer or a butter dish) is often seen with an accompanying butter knife: the present example being particularly rare having its accompanying spoon. Another example, with chrysoprase cabochon and butter knife, was sold by Matthew Barton Ltd., 25 May 2016, lot 416 and another Sotheby's, London, 5 October 2004, lot 23. JUENIN, GASPARE - INSTITUTIONES THEOLOGICAE AD USUM SEMINARIORUM. IN DUOS TOMOS DISTRIBUTA Lugduni [Lyon, France], Sumptibus Societatis, 1736. 2 volumes, folio, titles with large woodcut devices, attractively bound in full 18th century vellum, gilt title lettering to spines. This Catholic work 'Theological Institutions' by Juenin (1650-1713), was banned in 1708 by Pope Clement IX; CHOPPIN, RENE - MONASTICON, SEU DE JURE COENOBITARUM EDITIO NOVISSIMA. Frankfurt, Franciscum Varrentrapp, 1744. Folio, half-title, bound in full vellum, manuscript lettering to spine. Choppin (1537-1606) was one of the later exponents of French customary law as it developed in the 16th and 17th centuries. Given his anti-Calvin view of the political world and the church, his works were attacked by Francois Hotman, who allied himself with Calvin and the Geneva reformers (3)++occasional light browning internally, bindings good and sound, the 18th century vellum is in good condition and they are quite attractive on the shelf. A substantial Victorian Aesthetic Movement hall stand, outswept cornice above a central looking-glass, flanked by a mirrored arrangement of four fielded panels carved with foliate bosses above three plaques of frolicking putti, lotus-capped brass coat hooks throughout, the projecting base centred by a marble plateau above a long frieze drawer, the stand with three-quarter gallery housing provision for umbrellas and walking sticks in turned dishes, shelf undertier, bun feet, 214cm high, 137cm wide, c. 1880
