A Victorian mahogany pedestal desk by Sopwith & Co, Newcastle on Tyne, the top section with a central fall opening to reveal an arrangement of pigeon holes flanked by a single panelled cabinet door to each side opening to reveal an adjustable shelf and two short drawers on two pedestals of four short cockbeaded drawers fitted with turned wooden handles on plinth bases, the pedestals stamped `1166`, 122cm wide, 143cm high (overall), 71cm deep NOTE: Thomas Sopwith, son of a cabinet maker. Sopwith maintained links with the family furniture and joinery business throughout his life, he invented and the family firm manufactured. An ingenious type of desk with all its drawers secured by a single lock the monocleid` which won a prize in the 1851 exhibition. Sopwith went on to become an illustrator of antiquities and wrote a book on the Alston Mining area.
