Layers of old paint have been stripped back, with the original wood given a 'scumbled' effect grain, while the interiors have been freshly painted and missing shelves remade. Shapland & Petter of Barnstaple fine Arts & Crafts walnut motto bookcase, the shelved gallery with a copper repoussé panel bearing the motto 'The Sweet Serenity of Books' by poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, on spindle columns above two lead glazed doors, with copper strapwork above and below, flanked by open shelves, 155cm high, 125cm wide and 36cm deep.CONDITION REPORT: There is a crack to the back of the right lower shelf. There areas of age-related staining and surface marks. The lower right shelf has a small gap from the shelf to the support. There are minor age-related scratches to the strapwork. There are gaps to the central back board. The interior depth is 28cm. There is no evidence of woodworm.
Attributed to Peter Waals (Cotswold school), cherry wood, black walnut and ebonised two door wardrobe, the moulded cornice above a pair of fielded panel doors enclosing shelves and hanging space, 74ins x 46ins x 24ins Provenance: The wardrobe was ordered by the vendor's grandfather, Arthur Mitchell (then Chairman of Mitchells & Butlers Brewery). He was an important patron of Waals and the Barnsley brothers of the Cotswold School of Arts and Crafts founded by Ernest GimsonScuffs and marks from use but could use a good clean and re-polish would bring back up to good condition. Inside needs a little tidying, shelves all fit but bottom shelf has split into along grain. Did not have any drawers, even bottom section
