A Dutch marquetry glazed display cabinet, 19th century, inlaid all over with flowers, ribbons and classical urns, the arched cornice above a pair of glazed doors flanked by glazed panels, the lower section with pair of glazed doors on bun feet206 x 152 x 33cmProvenance: Crossbrook, Hilton, CambridgeshireSome small areas of veneer loss, mainly to bottom corner of right door, upper right and bottom right corners of right side, and to left of top shelf, some small areas of lifting of veneer and some further wear to edges commensurate with age and use. A Tyrolean painted pine 'Bauernschrank' wardrobe, 18th century, the pair of cupboard doors painted with various flowers and religious figures, flanked by canted corners with turned moulding, raised on squat bun feet167 x 143 x 67cmPlease see photos for interior which has been fitted with a large single top shelf with a shallow shelf, both of which seem to be original, however the lower twin section with central division seems to be somewhat later but the iron bar across both for clothes hanging and the shaker pegs fixed to the back seem to be original. The wardrobe does not come apart for transportationThe right section of the cornice loose but present. Some dusting from worm and requires treatment, particularly the top, but other areas with no or showing minor holes, and the damage does not appear to be structural.Possible minor strengthening to the paint on the right hand side panel (see images) but otherwise the way that the paint shows craquelure and dryness which runs true with the grain, suggests the paintwork is in unrestored condition.Consistent with this are the areas of dirt on the front of the doors and on the end grain of the doors, which are evidence of longterm handling and honest patination. The left hand vignette appears to feature the Annunciation, and with lettering to the cornice "Magdalena" confirms this to be a marriage chest from the alpine area of Europe, circa 1800.

We went into the village to by cocanut matting and a lantern and Price’s night lights (I brought the night lights) for it. It has a shelf (made by Moon) for the cups and saucers. I’ve forgotten if I told you that we discovered a secret passage out of our house and we keep a candle burning down there. The Milne’s think ‘Pheobe’ is a sweet name. Will you mind is I stay a day or two longer? There was a lot of kickery yesterday between Moon’s horse and my horse. My horse jumped a herdal yesterday (very low). We will send you some primrose on Thursday. Send my love to Daddy, from Anne. Nanny sends her love. (nineteen kisses) —7in. (17.5cm.) high x 4 ½in. When he was sixteen, and away at boarding school, Peter’s mother gave his childhood bear to a local jumble sale. He thought it ‘unmanly’ to show any sign of emotions but the loss remained with him. More than thirty years later he was at a dinner party in New York when a ‘beautiful lady guest’ recounted how her childhood bear had met an untimely end many years previously, and how this sad event had never left her memory. Peter then realised that it was not just the English who held their bears so close to their hearts, and decided to research the subject and to write a book. Bear with Me was published in 1969, it was a great success and was republished in 1970 as The Teddy Bear Book; following a television appearance on the Johnny Carson’s Tonight show, Miss Euphemia Ladd from Maine, sent her own Teddy Bear to Peter’s Chelsea flat with a note apologising for the hump he had acquired after all those years sitting! She had just closed down her dry goods and grocery store where her bear had sat on a shelf for over forty years. On arrival he was immediately christened ‘Delicatessen’. When Derek Granger, the producer, was looking or a ‘large and rumpled’ bear to play Aloysius, Peter’s collection was an obvious place to start and Deli was chosen. The rest is history, he was seen by millions across the world and was a huge part of why old Teddy Bears became popular to collect! We, us arctophiles, have a lot to be grateful for to Peter and Aloysius.
