A GEORGE III MAHOGANY CORNER WASHSTAND, the top shelf with cut-outs for bowls and now glazed over, the middle shelf with short drawer flanked by a pair of dummy drawer fronts, raised on splayed square-section legs joined by a wavy T-shaped stretcher. 104cm high, 55cm wide; together with ANOTHER GEORGE III MAHOGANY CORNER WASHSTAND (2)
A GEORGIAN OAK SPOON RACK, with arched top and two tiers for hanging, the base with open box; together with A VICTORIAN MINIATURE CHEST OF DRAWERS, with two short over two long drawers; and AN ARTS AND CRAFTS METAL-MOUNTED HANGING CUPBOARD, the interior with shelf and two drawers, the door with metal tree-form hinges. (3) Spoon rack 56.5cm high
A late Regency/early William IV mahogany buffet; the three-quarter galleried top with large gadrooned mushroom-style finials above two further shelves, the middle shelf with two half-width drawers, with reeded turned uprights in Gillow's style and based on short turned legs terminating in castors (105cm wide x 43.5cm deep x 114cm high)
A Regency period gentleman's mahogany and boxwood-strung compactum; the inverted breakfront cornice above two panelled doors enclosing a shelf, with five full-width graduated drawers below flanked by gadrooning, panelled cupboard left and right, raised on shaped bracket feet (231cm wide x 63cm deepest x 183 high)
A 19th century mahogany, chequer strung and mother of pearl inlaid table display cabinet; the hinged glazed top folding back to reveal a central front mahogany frame with oval glass and lifting vertically for removal, mahogany frame with glass top, sides and front and glass shelf raised on four heavily cast brass feet modelled as animal paws upon squat bun undersides (47.5cm high x 42.5cm at widest point to tip of brass feet)
A 19th century marble-topped pier cabinet; two glazed doors below a gilt frieze decorated with scrolling foliage and flanked by two outset corners with columns, the glazed doors headed with gilt roundels in relief, raised on plinth base (marble broken on the corner and cracked across the top) oval paper maker's label to back 'Kennard Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer, Appraiser & Undertaker 19 Grand Parade, St Leonards' (140cm widest x 35cm deepest x 108cm high)The marble is broken on the corner and cracked across the top (see image). Overall the piece is reasonable; there is quite a lot of scratching of paint away on the bottom of the plinth on the outset corners commensurate with age; there is some discolouration to the sides, on the left-hand return there is a little bit composition moulding away, similarly so on the top on the left hand top, approx. 1 inch away; the original velvet lining the shelves has lightened significantly with some staining, mostly to the top shelf, some of the central applied gilded decoration to the plinth is away, there are vertical paint cracks on the doors mostly to the upper section of the frame; there are pieces of applied moulding missing in places, in the Auctioneer's opinion this would not take too much to rectify. The item came privately.
A very fine 19th century Aesthetic Movement circular satinwood, amboyna cross-banded and walnut occasional table, the circular top exhibiting fine specimen wood marquetry decoration of a swallow in flight above fuchsias and a small butterfly, with three angular faux-bamboo satinwood legs united by a circular dished walnut undertier (41cm diameter x 52cm high)The item has been entered privately and appears in very good overall condition with no major problems noted; the marquetry on the circular top (although a little faded commensurate with age) is very fine and is on satinwood with an amboyna edge with further stringing. The under shelf appears to be very sturdy and is original with a good and high configuration; legs are well and no breakages or restorations noted. Some scuttering and scratches to lower part of the leg commensurate with age. The legs all appear to be original; there is an historic approx.. 3-inch crack to the underside of the pine disk which also runs on slightly further; one further crack is also noted; also 2-inch crack to the circular under tier emanating from the edge of the rim to where the bowl actually starts to deepen. The top exhibits minor surface scratches which the Auctioneer advises could probably be sorted with a minimum of effort by a professional restorer.
A Japanese hardwood and ivory shodana, Meiji Period, by Shoso Kosen, bearing two character signature and red seal, with various shelves, cupboards, recesses and drawers inlaid in ivory, bone, mother of pearl and lacquer with numerous animals, insects, flower and family subjects including children, gardeners, a smoking man sat on faggot bales, a mother with two children, the stem of a large blossom on a basketweave ground, praying mantis, rhinoceros beetle, sparrows and quail on openwork base, height 144cm, width 125cm, depth 40cm.Provenance: from the deceased estate of a private collector, The Lizard, Cornwall. Condition report:The numerous images show the condition. Of the fourteen pictorial panels to the sides, front and inside the hinged doors only one minor loss of the tip of a bamboo blade is noted. To the gallery at the back of the centre shelf there are two missing pieces from the ivory capping rail. Otherwise there is a missing roundel/Mon to a shelf side rail. The four crouching ivory beasts are present as are the top ivory caps. All carved ivory door and drawer knobs are present. The back is finished. There are numerous breaks, mends and joint movements to the woodwork mostly visible from the back. Inside a sliding door is a label referring to expertise from these rooms. We understand the cabinet was acquired in Hong Kong in the 1960's by the deceased collector along with several other pieces from this estate.
