Provenance: Porkington Library, shelf number labels to front pastedown. Porkington (or Brogyntyn) is a mansion house near Oswestry in Shropshire, formerly the estate of the Maurice and Owen families, and subsequently the Ormsby-Gore (Harlech) family from 1815. It housed famous English and Welsh manuscripts which are now in the National Library of Wales."The work was originally published in numbers, seventy-two of these appearing from May 1775 until 1798... Curtis intended to continue the work until all the plants growing wild within ten miles of London were figured and described, and then to publish a continuation of it to extend to all plants indigenous to Great Britain. Unfortunately the undertaking did not receive the encouragement it deserved and so it was never completed. W. Hugh Curtis points out that the Flora londinensis was Curtis's favourite botanical project, but the sales seldom, if ever exceeded 300 copies and the venture lost him a good deal of money... Curtis adopted the novel plan of having the specimens drawn to a uniform scale and to life size, and most of the plates display a high degree of accuracy. In the opinion of Salisbury, the majority of the figures 'represent the most successful portrayals of British wild flowers that have ever been achieved'." (Henrey pp. 65-67).
