My Man Jeeves, first edition, first issue with Butler & Tanner listed as printers and measuring 175x111mm., usual light browning to margins, 2pp. advertisements, lacking rear endpaper, hinges tender, original blind-stamped cloth, minor shelf-lean, spine slightly faded and spotted, minor bumping to spine ends and corners, otherwise excellent, [McIlvaine A22a], 8vo, 1919.⁂ The first book to introduce Jeeves and Wooster, Wodehouse's most revered characters.
Early 19th Century mahogany low linen press cupboard or 'half dresser', the oblong top with reel carving over a pair of fielded panelled doors enclosing oak lined single tray shelf, over two short and one long cockbeaded drawer, on plinth base, 108cm x 53cm x 107cm high Condition: Top has light scratches, some dark marks and a crescent shaped burn mark. Both side mouldings are slightly loose but intact, crack to left side of front edge moulding. Minor watermarks to front which could be cured with a wax polish. A French Directoire mahogany and gilt brass mounted secretaire abbatant, circa 1815, the grey veined marble inset top within a pierced brass three quarter gallery, above a drawer and the fall front secretaire section, opening to a baize inset and an arrangement of five drawers and an open shelf section, above three further drawers, flanked by a pair of fluted pilasters, on turned tapering feet, 149cm high, 87cm wide, 48cm deep
A George III satinwood and purple heart banded secretaire bookcase, circa 1790, the arched pediment corned by patera painted terminals and surmounted by turned urn finials, the pair of astragal glazed doors opening to adjustable shelves, the fall front secretaire drawer opening to a tooled leather inset writing surface and an arrangement of small drawers and pigeon holes framed by green stained sycamore moulding, above a pair of cupboard doors opening to an adjustable shelf, above square section tapering legs and spade feet, 218cm high, 95cm wide, 48cm deep Provenance: Private Collection, Gloucestershire An example of remarkably similar design but with polychrome decoration is currently with Apter Fredericks (July 2018). The example with Apter Fredericks is attributed to Seddon, Son and Shackleton and is said to relate to a design by Thomas Sheraton for a Secretary and Bookcase, published as pl.XXVIII in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Drawing Book, 1793.
