A JAPANESE LACQUER SAGEJUBAKO (PORTABLE PICNIC SET), LATE EDO / MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY the shaped oblong frame with silver handle and shelves to the top section, below to one side a rectangular four-tiered box and lid, lacquered on the exterior with various geometric grounds with foliate or bird motif mons, the cover with a mandarin duck perched on rocks above a winding stream, to the other side with a shaped oblong sake container embellished with trailing chrysanthemums on all sides on a nashiji ground, the upper shelf of the frame supporting a deep oblong tray with matching decoration, the second shallow shaped square tray lacquered with a waterside mountain scene including huts and trees below a flock of cranes flying overhead, the sides and top of the frame decorated with further trailing chrysanthemums 35 x 33 x 20cm

GEORGE III STRIPPED PINE AND MARBLE FIRE SURROUND AND POLISHED STEEL REGISTER GRATE 18TH CENTURY the dentil moulded shelf above a frieze carved with foliate scrolls, flowers, and a central leaf motif flanked by acanthus brackets, above a flower and leaf tip carved opening with a Portoro marble moulded surround marked at the corners with carved white marble flower heads; the register with circular bosses and a grate surmounted with urn finials above a pierced apron and ash tray (Dimensions: Overall 179cm wide, 151cm high, 27cm deep; interior opening 99cm x 94cm)(Overall 179cm wide, 151cm high, 27cm deep; interior opening 99cm x 94cm)Condition report: Surround: has been professionally stripped and quite thoroughly. There are some minor areas with traces of residual gesso and paint carved details are generally good with fine detail; some minor losses to some of the leaf points in places and one of the leaf scrolls has been broken off and visibly restuck but mis-aligned some splits to the top board of the shelf with a little lifting in places some filled knot holes and other nail holes along the side edges and legs grain appears relatively tight Marble: general good condition and appearance right flower head with a loss to one petal tip several rough spots along edge of L facing jamb other minor nibbles along edges at joins there are white mable blocks not shown in the illustration that fill the spaces at the base of the jambs Insert: general good condition but with some surface rust to the steel and areas of oxidisation around the frame, mainly some handprints that have oxidised and will need cleaning up grate is intact and in good condition but with signs of use the grate and surround were installed together in the original location before coming to us, so all components do fit together; there is a visible area of overlap on the grate borders where marble was fitted and attached. This has left some marks around the perimeter.
