Lot 2035

A vintage French oak two-section tambour-front notaire cabinet, the upper section having eighteen fall-front compartments, the lower being shelf fitted. Width 130cm, height 205cm, depth 46cm. Upper tambour A/F. Generally good but clearly used condition with surface marks and scratches complimenting it's vintage appearance. The upper tambour front has it's last piece detached from the remainder of the door and engaged in the lock, which does not appear to work with the key that opens the lower section. The top of the lower section is slightly loose, and one side of the front tambour-retaining rail is detached, though neither of these flaws are visible when assembled or affect use.

The shelf supports are missing, but these are relatively easy to make as they are just blocks of wood to fit into a slot.

Variation in colour suggests the base may not originally have been from this bookcase.

A 17th century and later panelled oak larder cupboard, with two doors revealing a shelf fitted interior with lifting lid covering another compartment to base, the exterior with chip carved decoration and raised on stile legs. Width 178cm, height 188cm, depth 65cm.In our opinion this piece is formed from pieces of other furniture. Some signs of worm, and scratches, possibly from cat, to one side. handle to raise interior lid is absent. Cornice appears much newer than the rest.

Of the 500 hardbacks printed, around 300 were issued to schools & libraries - this being one of the even scarcer and more desirable 200 that were issued to booksellers. Octavo, hardback, publisher's original laminated pictorial boards. Complete with all requisite issue points denoting a TRUE FIRST PRINTING, namely: full number line on copyright page, "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1"; "1 wand" appearing twice on p.53; "Philosopher's" misspelled "Philospher's" on rear cover; "Wizardry and Witchcraft" [rather than "Witchcraft and Wizardry"] on rear cover; "Joanne Rowling" on copyright page; no space between "Taylor" and "1997" on copyright page. A good example with bold boards, some very light surface scratches to laminate, tiny areas of loss to laminate in places, some discolouration to spine, light bumping & wear to corners and extremities, shelf-lean, contents mostly very good with usual toning/browning to page edges, spillage marks affecting pp.33-46, no inscriptions or stamps, some lightly folded corners, a few light marks in places, but overall a good example of this very scarce first issue.
