An English Thuya, Ebonised, Tulipwood Banded and Gilt Metal Mounted Bonheur du Jour, late 19th century, the superstructure with a pierced brass gallery above an arched recess enclosing a mirrored interior flanked by two moulded cupboard doors inset with blue and white jasper-style medallions, all between canted and reeded uprights, the base with a central pull-out drawer with leather covered ratchet writing surface flanked by two smaller drawers, all with guilloche border enclosing further medallions, on fluted supports joined by a shelf and inverted breakfront platform base 120cm by 57cm by 142cmProvenance: Private Collection, Victoria Lodge, Tweedsmuir, BiggarFor a similar desk see Payne (Christopher) European Furniture of the 19th Century, p.282, described as being by "an unknown firm, presumably from London?" Generally good condition. Some general surface scratches to each tier and the writing surface consistent with age. Some small veneers losses and shrinkage splits (as photographed). Some rubbing to the giltwork. The corners on some of the fluted columns are also bruised. The right-hand cupboard door is locked (no key) - the other cupboard door is open. Some sections of timber are slightly dry and faded, particularly around the crossbanded sections, where some small sections of veneer are lifting. Please see additional images online.
A French Louis XV-Style Kingwood, Tulipwood, Parquetry-Decorated and Ormolu-Mounted Vitrine, late 19th century, with a breche verre marble top above a moulded frieze with acanthus-scrolled mounts above a central bevelled glass door centred by a mask, the apron decorated with C scrolls, with later fabric-lined interior and adjustable glass shelf, the base with a gadrooned border, on bracket feet with acanthus and scrolled conforming mounts, the verso labelled and stamped Ameublements, Pagny Fils, P.Thomas, 100 Rue de Bac, Paris141cm by 44cm by 154cmThe interior has only one glass shelf, which is removeable. Cabinet is in good condition. The gilt mounts are also very good. The marble top has some chipping and small frits. Small chip to the front right-hand corner (as photographed). These environments are inhabited by dynamic, changing entities with hybrid anatomies that mix delicately featured human faces with bulbous animal bodies. These creatures move through a colorfully flecked, luminous matter that supports and harmonizes their existence, like an extracorporeal amniotic fluid. You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.
