Phelps, a published novelist and broadcaster, was head of the Staff Training Department at the BBC in London, when Achebe, working for the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation arrived in 1957. He told Phelps 'that he too wanted to be a novelist and produced an immense manuscript in a suitcase. Gilbert read it and told him he had not one novel, but six. Achebe duly carved shorter novels from it, the first being Things Fall Apart. Robert Heals for Staples Ladderax - a five bay set of sectional furniture, 1960s, in teak and gold painted metal, comprising a wall unit with central fall-front drinks cabinet and three shelves (one half-depth), a corner unit with four shelves, a wall unit with top sliding-door cupboard and central fall front drinks cabinet over a single shelf, a similar wall unit with central fall-front desk and a final wall unit with upper glass fronted cabinet over a fall-front desk with a different arrangement of pigeonholes and a single lower shelf, all five sections of 200cm. height, in good condition overall.
Early 19th Century Welsh oak press cupboard, having moulded cornice above two blind panelled doors, the interior revealing one adjustable shelf, above three fitted drawers with Art Nouveau design handles, the projecting base with two blind panelled doors standing on stile feet. 120 x 53 x 184cm approx. (B.P. 21% + VAT) Art nouveau handles losses to the feet, base is stapled with with cardboard - very dry/faded, losses to the sides.
