Pavlos Dionyssopoulos('Pavlos') (1930 Filitra, Greece - 2019 Paris) Bar, mixed media with drawing and collage on cardboard, 101 cm x 67,5 cm sheet dimension, signed, dated 75, some superficial paper abrasion, slight spotting, minimal darkening, mounting residues on versoAfter studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens, Pavlos went to Paris in 1954 on a scholarship from the French government, where he settled permanently in 1958 and found his new artistic home. Around 1960, under the influence of the Nouveaux Réalistes, he turned away from painting and towards assemblage and collage. From 1963 onwards, he exhibited at the annual exhibitions of the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, the most important forum for contemporary art in France since 1946. A large group in Pavlos' work is made in a combination technique of drawing and painting, as well as shapes and stripes of paper material cut to size and used secondarily. In this case, half of the bottles on the lower shelf are glued on from white paper shapes, while the other half appears as a drawn outline. The upper bottles are each composed of two paper shapes, some of which reveal coloured halftone offset dots from poster printing. The background and contours are drawn with blue and white coloured pencil on light brown light cardboard.

"Christ alive". Chased copper figure, with traces of gilding and champlevé enamel. Limoges. France. Romanesque. 13th century.Due to its dimensions, 18 x 14,5 cm, it must have been the central figure affixed to a large processional cross. He preserves one of his four original nails in his left hand.Christ alive, crucified, covered with a large loin cloth in white and ultramarine blue, with a crowned, slightly tilted head and blue glass eyes. On one side, this is still a Romanesque depiction of Christ, who appears glorious and triumphant before death, with open eyes. On the other side, the knees are bent and the naturalness of the torso augers the beginning of what would be the gothic model of the suffering Christ. There is a comparable example kept in the Musée d'Art et d’Archéologie in Senlis, France, which is still affixed to its original cross. (https://musees.ville-senlis.fr/Collections/Explorer-les-collections/Rechercher-une-oeuvre/Musee-d-Art-et-d-Archeologie/Christ-en-croix)As the museum mentions in the index card, both Christs show the characteristics of Limoges craftsmanship "opus emovicense", according to the expression used in the Middle Ages to define the objects made in enamelled champlevé copper in the Limoges workshops: the use of champlevé enamel in ultramarine blue on the loincloth, the fine chasing on the torso, and the presence of the suppedaneum, the shelf on which Christ’s feet rest. In the museum’s example, the enamel in ultramarine blue is preserved.
"Christ alive". Chased copper figure, with slight traces of gilding and champlevé enamel. Limoges. France. Romanesque. 13th century.17 x 13 cm. Cross measurements: 21 x 17 cm.It must have been the central figure affixed to a large processional cross, which is not the one now preserved, dating from a later period. It has visible faults on both hands. It preserves two of its four original nails, on its feet.Christ alive, crucified, covered with a large loin cloth in turquoise blue and green, with a crowned, slightly leaning head and one of the eyes in dark or jet glass, the other is not preserved. Like the previous lot, this is still a Romanesque depiction of Christ, who appears glorious and triumphant before death, with open eyes, while the bent knees and the naturalness of the torso augers the beginning of what would be the gothic model of the suffering Christ.Of particular note is the fine chasing on the torso and the presence of the suppedaneum, the shelf on which Christ’s feet rest.
