Fry, C Hilary, Stuart Keith and Emil Urban (series editors) Birds of Africa (7 vols; 1982-2004) 315 x 215; shelf space 35 cm; wight 22 kg One of the finest series of bird books to have been published in recent times, this Birds of Africa set needed a quarter of a century to plan and publish, with many of the world`s leading authorities (including South African Ken Newman) working under the three series editors. The bird artist responsible for most of the set`s 232 full-page colour plates was Martin Woodcock, with credit for most of the hundreds of line illustrations in the text going to Ian Wallis. The set runs to a total of 4700 pp, with good indexing and cross-referencing making it easy to use. All the volumes in this lot are first editions in fine condition, with no ownership names or other markings. Departures from what would otherwise be `as new` condition are light thumbing (indicating how little this set, from the estate of a leading Johannesburg bird book collector, was used), as well as the minor blemishes noted in the following summary of the volumes, which are bound in matching brown cloth, gilt to the front and spine, and with laminated dustjackets. Vol I. xiii + 521 pp. Small chip to the dustjacket at the rear top fold. Vol II. xvi + 552 pp. Headband soft. Vol III. xvi + 611 pp. Small black horizontal stain at upper middle of the front face of dustjacket. Vol IV. xv + 609 pp. Small crease to the top front of dustjacket. Vol V. xix + 669 pp. The last 18 leaves, including some blanks, are lightly rippled at the middle of the outer edge - with no interference to the text. Vol VI. xvii + 724 pp. Headband soft; 3 cm stain at upper left of front face of dustjacket. Vol VII. xxi + 666 pp. The top of the front face of the dustjacket and 6 cm of the front upper board and the top of the spine are lightly rubbed. This complete set is rare in this condition. Gordon McGregor SIGNED: The Native Pass Tokens of German South West Africa The very same book in its first edition 1991 as well as the second edition 2013. This book provides an overview of the native pass tokens used in the colony of German West Africa. The operation of the pass token system is described in detail along with the depiction of the individual tokens. All Districts in which pass tokens were used are given together with the relevant serial numbers. The format of this book makes it convenient to use as a reference work for collectors of such tokens. Every historian serious about their research regarding the colony of German South West Africa should have this book in his library shelf. The South African Military Administration then set up a Native Affairs Office, which continued with the control of the natives using the existing German laws and system of native control and even carrying on with the issuing of tokens. As an example of this during the period June to August 1916 tokens with the number range 13760-14104 were given out to native domestic workers in Windhoek. It is presumed that blank tokens had the numbers punched on them by Native Affairs Officials, as this number range for Windhoek was never ordered from Germany. The 1991 edition is written in both English and German and is limited to 500 copies only. It has 52 pages and is in great condition. The 2013 edition is signed by McGregor, is unread and brand new with 66 pages. Splendid Windhoek Namibia Scientific Society 1991 & 2013 Reserve: $35 Click here to view further details and to bid

Ernest Cole HOUSE OF BONDAGE House of Bondage By Ernest Cole (A South African Black Man Exposes in His Own Pictures and Words the Bitter Life of His Homeland Today). This is a landmark book in South African photojournalism. Cole fled South African in 1966 to publish this remarkable photo-essay which documents apartheid. The book was banned in South Africa but created a sensation abroad. An exhibition of his work and the photos in this book has recently been mounted by the Hasselblad Foundation and was shown at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and abroad. `House of Bondage` is now a collector`s item. It is one of only three South African books included in the massive work on `The Photo Book` by Parr and Badger (the other two being by David Goldblatt). This copy is very good in very good dust jacket. Some shelf wear on the book and jacket, corners bumped, some signs of use. Overall a lovely copy.
