Issued by the Intelligence Department for official use only by the Government of India as a practical military and political handbook of this region of the North-West Frontier and Afghanistan. Sources were officers in the field and their clandestinely-employed local tribesmen. The work, along with other tribal monographs, route books and military reports were classified and subject to strict rules of custody. It was also ordered that when a new edition of a particular work appeared all previous editions had to be destroyed. As a result these works survive in very few locations. (Finding Aid. A Regency rosewood secretaire chiffonier, the secretaire drawer opening to reveal a tooled leather ratchetted writing slope flanked by a pen tray and recesses for ink wells and writing accoutrements, above a pair of doors with brass grilled silk fabric backed panels, opening to reveal a single shelf, raised on a plinth base, 86½cm high, 68cm wide 36cm deep.
A mid century bedroom suite, comprising a Meredew teak chest of five long drawers, raised on a plinth base, 100cm high, 76cm wide, 46cm deep, a dressing table with a rectangular glass mirror over a shelf, one long drawer flanked by four short drawers, raised on turned legs, brass capped, 120cm high, 152cm wide, 46cm deep, a double wardrobe, disassembled, and a G-Plan double headboard with integral bedside tables, each having a frieze drawer, raised on a square leg, brass capped. An early 20th century mahogany octagonal side table to turned and outswept tripartite support, diameter 49cm and an Edwardian line inlaid and crossbanded satinwood octagonal side table with single lower shelf to outswept supports, diameter 43cm (af) (2). CONDITION REPORT The top of the 20th century mahogany side table has been crudely refinished and has a large split through the centre of it.
A late 18th century oak kitchen food storage cabinet, stepped cornice above single three-panelled door with three interior shelves and four spice drawers above single panelled door with one interior shelf, to block supports, 194 x 94 x 46cm. CONDITION REPORT There is age related wear in the form of surface scratches, deeper scratches, the hinges have been replaced as has the knob and escutcheon to the top and bottom doors, there are some splits to the sides of the top cabinet and base, no sign of woodworm, the panel to the drawer to base is different to the panels above possibly a marriage of two pieces from the same period, a good piece of furniture for its age
A 19th century flame mahogany bonheur du jour twin glazed display cabinet with glazed panels to either side, one interior later glass shelf, chequerboard design to the base of the cabinet above four small drawers to serpentine desktop above one central drawer, to tapering cabriole supports with ormolu mounts throughout cabinet and desktop, 145 x 79 x 58cm. CONDITION REPORT There is age related wear throughout in the form of surface scratches with small cracks to the veneer, small areas of veneer missing mainly to the edges and the top of the display cupboard and desk top, approx six cracks to the veneer to the top of desk, small areas of ormolu missing, one area loose but present, no sign of woodworm or restoration.
