A pair of nottinghamshire victorian oak wall brackets carved by ralph tudsbery in the form of a heron with outspread wings standing amidst bulrushes, a snake at its feet, the semi-circular shelf with ivy leaves 44cm h; 35 x 18ct, stamped circular mark r tidsbery artist edwinstow notsh., lacking both the snakes` heads; other more minor losses but in essentially good and entirely original condition

(Title-page laid down, with subtitle excised and supplied in manuscript, T3v a little soiled, AA2-3 slightly stained, margins cut close.) Later 18th-century red morocco (spine browned and chipped, extremities rubbed). Provenance: William Beckford (purchaser's note: 'June 1808 Beckford, Sale at L. & S. 3-13-6'; pencilled shelf mark 'H. 6. North') -- S.F. Widdrington of Newton Hall (bookplate). Original half vellum gilt, Bakst signature in facsimile on the front board, the spine lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut (vellum lightly soiled). An early 18th Century burr walnut and herringbone cross banded bureau bookcase of small proportions, the fine serpentine edge, mirrored doors enclosing a shelf interior over two candle slides, the fall front enclosing a six drawer and compartmental interior with later inset, three graduated drawers with later replaced handles over bun feet, burr walnut and oak lined. Measuring 33.1-4" wide and 72.1-4" high.
