A good George III Mahogany bowfront Stick Barometer, signed J Ramsden, London, circa 1790, concealed mercury tube with a single silvered dial, signed, well figured trunk with urn shaped cistern cover, L 100 cm. Jesse Ramsden (b1731-d1800) is known to be one of the greatest instrument makers of all time. His outstanding invention was a dividing machine for accurate scale division and was credited with adapting the tripod as a carrying case for the mountain barometer. A 19th century teak travelling trunk. WIth domed lid, gilt metal fittings and rivet details, a lowering shelf fitted inside the lid, and a further lidded compartment. On small brass rollers. H47cm x W98cm x D53cm. According to the vendor, built by an ancestor from the reclaimed wood of a ship.

William Varley of Huddersfield (Yorks)- Mid-18th century 30hr oak longcase clock, hood with a flat top and deep ogee cornice, wavy back-splats and detached pilasters with brass capitals, long trunk with a conforming flat topped door, square plinth raised on padded feet, brass dial with cast spandrels and engraved dial centre, Axe moon and calendar dial, chapter with Roman numerals, five minute Arabic's and matching steel hands, dial pinned to a chain driven countwheel striking movement, striking the hours on a cast bell. No weights or pendulum. William Varley (I) and (2) were 18th century father and son clockmakers working in Huddersfield (Yorks). As with this clock, William Varley (I) frequently signed his clocks with no place name. An 18th Century Oak Longcase Clock, by William Bird of Seagrave, the 12ins square brass dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture to the matted dial centre, engraved with bird and leaf scrolls, cast spandrels to corners, to the eight day two train movement striking on a bell, contained in case with pagoda top and Greek key carved cornice and turned columns to hood, plain trunk door, on plinth base, 80.5ins highThe clock presents in good overall condition. There may have been some historic restoration to the base but it is very sympathetic and looks well. No obvious signs of damage or previous repair other than the odd small shrinkage crack to the hood. One of the rear pillars to the hood is cracked through. Everything else appears to be fine. The door functions correctly. The glass is free from any chips or scratches. The putty appears original. The hinges appear original. Likewise the door to the case closes properly. The lock is not present but the hinges again appear original and function correctly. The weights and pulleys are present as is the winding crank. The dial presents nicely showing no undue wear or obvious sign of recent restoration. The hands appear original. The mechanism appears clean and complete but we cannot warrant the authenticity of all components. The bell appears original. The clock winds, runs and sets but should be regarded as untested. The backboard has had some historic work but this is not recent. Prospective bidders are strongly advised to study all images closely prior to bidding.
