There are planes overhead the whole time, and we have heard several nights what we thought were Nazi bombers . . .' Reresby writes of a friend, Bernard, who was unfortunately called up the day before Reresby came back from Eton, 'He says his regiment were completely wiped out at Dunkirk and are therefore all new . . . Sorry about all this military stuff; but as I never tell you anything about my training other than the idiosyncrasies of sergeants, I thought it might interest you, . . . Isn't it wonderful news about Virginia? I am so glad . . . An Indian carved ivory figure of an elephant mahout, 19th century, the mahout astride the neck leans forward over the head to watch the lowered trunk pushing a log, on an ebonised plinth base, overall length 6¼in. (15.8cm.) long, 4¾in. (12.1cm.) high. * Condition: A few hairline cracks over the rear of the elephant. Otherwise good with no other faults.
A Russian silver gilt twin handled cup, probably Aleksandr Karpov of St. Petersburg, 84 standard, mythical beast twin handles, the stem fashioned as a tree trunk and roots, capped by foliate canopy, holding the bowl, raised on circular foot, 3¼in. (8.2cm.) high, weight 3.1 tr.oz. * The circular foot needs to be tightened, rubbing to gilt throughout, handles bent, very pleasing, good.
