A fine late 17th century Charles II / James II walnut and marquetry eight day longcase clock by Henry Jones of London - the 10in square brass dial with winged cherub mask spandrels, silvered Roman chapter ring with stylised fleur-de-lys half hour markers and outer minute track with Arabic 5 minute markers and a matted centre with chamfered silvered calendar aperture at 6 and silvered subsidiary seconds dial at 12, signed 'Henry Jones in Ye Temple' to lower edge, fronting a movement with 7½ x 5in plates, five knopped and finned pillars, anchor escapement, bolt and shutter maintaining power and small outside count wheel striking on a bell, the hood with pierced fret carved frieze and barleytwist pilasters, the sides with rectangular windows and conforming quarter pilasters against bargeboards to the rear, the trunk door with circular lenticle dividing two broken-arched floral marquetry panels with floral spandrels to the angles, over a conforming floral marquetry base with later bun feet, 193 cm high, 44 cm at widest point to hood.* Condition: The clock has clearly been through the trade in the past 20-30 years and the movement has been cleaned and restored - it remains in good condition and as far as we are aware, was working when removed from the vendor's property and is complete with pendulum and weights. The case has also been cleaned and restored and remains in good condition - there are some small veneer repairs evident, as would be expected. The plinth does not appear to have been reduced in height as far as well can see, but the bun feet are later, as are the barleytwist columns and quarter columns to the hood. The trunk door has probably been reveneered at some time, probably in the early 20th century - it is lined with oak which appears to be rather more recent than the remainder of the case structure. There are several old and more recent holes drilled through the back panel for old wall fixings. The sides of the case have bowed over time and there is a little movement showing in the veneers, although this is minimal. The case does some some old (inactive) worm throughout, which in a few places also shows to the external veneers, which have been wax filled over time.

The family travelled from Scotland and relocated to India for four years due to her father's job as a civil engineer. The black tin trunk included in the sale enclosed all of Sylvia's clothes for this return to their family home in 1914. This was packed away and it was over 100 years till the trunk was opened again. Some of the dresses show the unique Indian embroidery styles in comparison to the finer pieces of English/Scottish work. The vendor's have shared copies of photographs from their time in Madras, giving a unique insight into the colonial lifestyle that the Lobbans family lived. Sadly, Sylvia died at the young age of 26 whilst giving birth to her son.

The 'Gelber Löwe' pattern was first produced at Meissen after a Japanese porcelain original as part of the large order placed by the Paris merchant, Rudolph Lemaire, for copies of Asian porcelain. A large quantity of plates and dishes painted in this style were among the porcelain confiscated in April 1731 in the house of Lemaire's accomplice at the Dresden court, Count von Hoym, and subsequently sent to the Japanese Palace and entered in the inventory under no. 8. This present lot belongs to this group and is therefore one of the earliest examples of this decoration.Some of this porcelain was used for diplomatic gifts - to the English diplomat, Sir Thomas Robinson and the Bishop of Cracow, Jan Alexander Lipski - or was used for table services (for which large orders were subsequently placed) and moved to the court pantries (Hofkonditoreri) in Dresden and Warsaw. The 18th century inventories of the court pantries show that ten twelve-sided 'tiefe Confect Schaalen 10 Zoll in Diam' [deep confectionary dishes 10 Zoll in diam.] with the inventory number 8 were removed from the Japanese Palace for use: five in Dresden and five in Warsaw (published by C. Boltz, Hoym, Lemaire und Meissen - Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der Dresdener Porzellansammlung, in Keramos 88 (1980), p. 71, and by J. Weber, op. cit., I, p. 159 and p. 163). Eight day longcase clock 'William Gardner in Uxbridge fecit' with 10" dial, cherub and scroll spandrels in walnut case with quartered veneers and tapering barley twist columns, the hood formerly rising, with original hook. Various restorations late 17th/early 18th century.Condition report:Case looks late 17th/early 18th century. Old oak carcass with some original veneers. Door may have had some restoration (no trace of key escutcheon) old hinges nailed to door but re-fitted old screws on trunk. Hood top old but restorations on slide and mouldings on base. Nice tapering barley twist columns. Fret possibly original. Old hook nailed on. Bun feet replaced but base seems to be the same as trunk.Movement with possible wheel and pinion replacements. Back cock and pendulum 19th century brass cased weights, probably original.
