Andrew Broun [or Brown] (circa 1651-1712) was apprenticed to Humphrey Milne on 2nd February 1665. His apprenticeship was recorded thus "The second day of February 1665. The quilk day, Andro Broun, sone lawfull to umquihil Jon Broun, in Lang Newtone, is booked prentice to Umpra Milne, clock maker." Ten years later he officially ended his apprenticeship after demonstrating his skill to a committee of clockmakers and became a freeman of the Hammermen's Incorporation. He then took on several apprentices and journeymen himself throughout his career. He became Captain of the City Guard in 1685 and Master of the Hammermen's Incorporation in 1689.In 1689 and 1690 he was elected boxmaster [treasurer] of the Hammermen's Incorporation and in 1696 he became a Guild brother of Edinburgh. Although recorded as a highly capable maker, he apparently died penniless, with his son applying to the Incorporation for financial assistance on his father's death.John Smith, author of Old Scottish Clockmakers from 1453 to1850, states "In view of the long time he was in business, - thirty-five years - it is remarkable how exceedingly scarce are specimens of his art, only three have come under our notice: one being the splendid clock in the lobby of the advocates library, another that was exposed for sale in the window of a dealer in Queen Street Edinburgh, both these two having cases of beautiful and chaste marquetry; and the third one in possession of a private party in Linlithgow". WNAI - A PAIR OF MID-19TH CENTURY NAPOLEON III ORMOLU MOUNTED EBONISED AND PIETRA DURA SIDE CABINETS (2)Each with a black slate top over a slate mounted door decorated with fruiting trees with birds, flanked by Bacchic herms, 116cm wide; 53cm deep; 131cm highCondition report: Numerous losses, breaks and damages. Notably, one with a cracked and broken slate top at the front right projecting corner and further cracks to the panelled door.The other cabinet with extensive crack through the slate mounted door. Both with numerous shrinkage splits visible from the inside and further veneer cracks to the side doors. Both with many loose elements of inlay, notably to the sides, see extra images and in other areas. Both with losses to the pietra dura decoration on the doors, one with a section of the tree trunk missing. Both with heavy tarnishing, oxidisation to mounts and dirt and dust. Other general signs of wear and tear, with the inevitable scuffs, scrathes, dents, small chips and marks commensurate with wear, use and age. A collection of Chinese miscellaneous, 18th-19th century, comprising, a Canton enamelled famille rose teacup, cover and saucer, painted with figures in shaped panels, surrounded by butterflies and flowers, saucer 15.1cm diameter, a blue and white coffee cup, painted with flowers, 6.5cm high, a blue and white saucer, painted with a landscape scene, 12cm diameter, a Yixing zisha teapot, in the form of a tree trunk, decorated with moulded blossoming prunus branches, with a white metal spout, 21cm wide, a pair of cloisonne vases, of baluster form, decorated with peonies against a key fret ground, 21cm high, and a painted enamelled box, decorated with dogs in a garden, 9.8cm long (10)Condition report: Famille rose cup set - minute chips to the rims and foot rims, surface scratches, enamel losses.Blue and white saucer - star crack to base.Coffee cup - chipped and cracked, surface scratches.Teapot - cover chipped, spout replaced.Cloisonne vases - dents with enamel loss, surface sratches.Enamel box - enamel with losses and cracks, one corner chipped, minute knocks and surface scratching to metal.

Red and white beret - chip to edge of the base rim and crazing. Lady with gold hair and blue earing - chip to the edge.
3rd-4th century AD. A bronze octagonal lamp of squat profile, three splayed feet and long handle with small thumb-guard; the spout formed as an elephant's head with raised hollow trunk, ears pulled back; domed hinged lid surmounted by an eagle with spread wings, strong hooked beak and pellet eyes, feather detailing to the wings and legs. 1.2 kg, 27cm (10 1/2"). Acquired in the 1990s. Private US collection. Pierre Bergé & Associés, Archéologie, Paris, 29 November 2014, lot 239. Private New York collection. Northern Ireland collection. Accompanied by copies of the relevant Pierre Bergé catalogue pages. Oil lamps in antiquity were made from a variety of materials, including gold, silver, lead, bronze, and ceramics. In Rome, an oil lamp was originally called a lychnus, from the Greek ??????, with the oldest Roman lamps dating back to the 3rd century BC. In the age of the Roman Empire, it became customary to use lamps at funeral ceremonies and for public purposes. Over time, the manufacture of lamps increased in volume as a result of their wide variety of domestic applications. Structurally sound, lid opens smoothly, would benefit from a clean. No apparent worm or restoration.
